AFM and VVT in 4.8, 5.3 and 6.2, When did this start?

AFM and VVT in 4.8, 5.3 and 6.2, When did this start?

Postby 07silvr [OP] » Jun 01 2013, 3:19am

As it states above, when did GM start using AFM and VVT in all three V8 truck engines. I knew the 5.3 had AFM as does my 07NNBS.

I was under the impression that the 5.3 only had AFM, the 6.2 has AFM and VVT, and the 4.8 had neither.

Is this new to the 2013 model year, are they trying out the VVT in all trucks as a test for the new 2014 that has the same technology although a new design

I was looking at getting a 12 or 13 used or new and noticed on GM site that the 2013 1/2 tons have VVT and AFM on all three V8 engines.

All motors have vvt.

The 4.8 and 6.2, do not have AFM.

The only 6.2 to have AFM will be in the 2014.

DETROIT – The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will be available this fall with a 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8 that will produce an estimated 420 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, the most power and torque of any light duty truck engine. Final SAE-rated power and torque numbers will be available later this year.

The 6.2L V-8 will be available for Silverado LTZ and High Country models. With this engine, the Silverado is expected to have a class-leading maximum trailering capacity of 12,000 pounds.

In addition to the 6.2L V8, Silverado 1500 will offer a 4.3L V-6 SAE-certified at 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque and a 5.3L V-8 certified at 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.

All three EcoTec3 engines feature direct fuel injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and continuously variable valve timing, a combination not found in competitive trucks. The engines also use a compact overhead-valve design and weight-saving components such as aluminum blocks and cylinder heads to reduce mass for additional energy savings

All three provide the proven power, torque and dependability of a large-displacement engine, seamlessly switching to four-cylinder mode to save fuel during light-load driving. The 5.3L V-8 has EPA–estimated fuel economy of up to 23 mpg highway (2WD models), the best of any V-8 pickup, and better than Ford EcoBoost V-6.

Silverados equipped with the 4.3L V-6 will have towing ratings of up to 7,200 pounds, the highest for any base V-6 in the segment. Silverados equipped with the 5.3L V-8 and the max towing package, available later this year, will have towing ratings of up to 11,500 pounds.

The 2014 Silverado 1500 will be available in seven distinct trim levels. Two work trucks will be available, a 1WT and 2WT, with the 2WT adding features such as chrome bumpers, high-wear cloth seats and Chevrolet MyLink with a 4.2-inch color touch screen.

Silverado LT and LTZ models provide additional features, such as an 8-inch color touch radio and trailering package on the LT, and a standard 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8, leather seating, and dual-zone climate control on the LTZ. Z71 models with enhanced off-road capability are available in both LT and LTZ trim levels. This fall, the Silverado High Country will debut, giving Chevrolet a fresh new entry in the fast-growing premium pickup segment.

Silverado crew cabs with the available 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8 will begin reaching Chevrolet dealers in May. The suggested retail prices for crew cabs start at $32,710, including a $995 destination freight charge – the same as the 2013 model.

I read it wrong at first, Thanks

How long has the 5.3 and 4.8 had VVT?

Taken from Chevy website:
Fuel-Saving Technologies

Engines have been factory-filled with engine oil meeting GM’s new dexosTM specification, which has improved viscosity characteristics as compared to the previous GF-4 oil, contributing to better fuel economy.

On the 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L and 6.2L V8 engines, Continuously Variable Valve Timing (VVT) adjusts airflow in and out of the combustion chamber under all engine speeds, which makes for better fuel economy and lower emissions. On the 5.3L V8 engine, Active Fuel ManagementTM deactivates fuel delivery to
4 cylinders in lighter-load conditions, such as highway cruising, which improves fuel economy. On the 6.6L Diesel V8 engine, the 29,000 psi piezo-actuated common-rail fuel-injection system uses minimal hydraulic control energy, to maximize fuel economy.

No idea on that one. VVT has been around for awhile. A quick google search. Says they have been in motors from 2010 and on.

But i would wait on a 2012 or 2013. They will get real cheap when the 2014 start showing up on the lots.

Thanks, I am afraid my 2007 trade in value will drop more the price of a 12/13 model is why I am considering getting newer and doing it now, maybe. I don't know really what I am going to do

Sounds awesome, nice SC setup, I have considered that as well but I will probably spend my performance upgrade money on my next Vette, or track car, whenever I get another one

If I had that much HP in my daily driver truck I would get in too much trouble

ya im wishing I had bought a Vette. but when I bought the truck it was going to be a year round daily driver and all the mods were possible because I got some unexpected money. If I had known i was going to get retro pay I would have got a 11 vette for a little less then I paid for the truck. I never even looked at prices on vettes or camaros. just figured I couldnt aford one. I could have got a 1 year old vette with 1600 miles on it for $4000 less then my truck stock.

On the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado the 4.8L,5.3L, and 6.2L have variable valve timing. Only the 2013 5.3L has the active fuel management. On the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado all engines are equipped with active fuel management and variable valve timing. Hope this helped out.
