Another 5.3 oil leak

Another 5.3 oil leak

Postby country1911 [OP] » Jan 08 2012, 6:34pm

I have had an oil burning smell for a while in my truck, but never any signs of oil leakage. I recently have noticed a small mark in the driveway. So now it is time to correct the issue. Upon my initial inspection, it appears the oil is coming from the area around the oil filter. I checked the filter, it is tight. Will a filter leak of it is too tight? What else is on that area? Oil pan gasket? Any sensors?

Are there any usual suspects I should look into? The oil filter has oil on it but I haven't really dug into the issue yet. Just wanted to do some homework before I crawled under the truck.

Thanks in advance

A very common culprit in that oil is the oiler cooler connection or block off plate if you don't have the cooler. It's above the filter. I had to put a new gasket in mine.

I will check that, thanks for the reply. I am actually not sure if I have an oil cooler or not. Now is as good a time as any to find out.

Here's a pic of the block off above the filter. If you have a cooler there will be lines connected.

Just got done crawling around under the truck, very difficult to tell what is exactly leaking. Could be blockoff plate, could be filter, could be oil pan gasket. The pan gasket is the most likely culprit in my eyes as there is oil near the gasket in more than one place. I cleaned the area as well as possible, but I need to pick up some degreaser tomorrow to really get it clean. Then I can pinpoint the exact location of the leak. Thanks again for the help.

Nope, unfortunately, I have done that before. Spilled more than a quart before I could bend down and realize it. Now I am extremely careful of that and no longer change my oil when I am in a hurry. Such a messy lesson... Lol.

Yep, and I appreciate it. If I wouldn't have done it once before I wouldn't even have thought about it.

Thanks again
