It also would depend on how well maintained the engine was. If he bought it used, there is no way to determine how well they kept the oil changed.

I've got just over 50K on my 2009 and no smoke at all.

Smoke coming from tailpipe is no good news. If something is wrong with your motor, it will generally show symptoms. When you have smoke coming out your tailpipe, it might help point you towards what is wrong with your engine. If blue or bluish smoke is coming out of your vehicle’s tailpipe, the likely reason is burning or smoldering oil. Read more here: Diagnosing a problem through your exhaust pipe.

Are you still having blue smoke at start up. My 04 GMC 5.3L did this at 75K miles. May be a cracked head. This is common with the 5.3. Look at the GM website for TSB's. I added leak stop to the radiator and flushed the oil twice. I have 130K miles, but now have knocking in the morning. Will likely have to replace engine. Not good. GM should replace the heads if they are under warranty.

I to have a 2006 5.3l which has noisy lifters on cold starts as well as blue smoke on start up but only after driving it for a little while. I also go through antifreeze with no visible leaks.

I have a 2011 with 4700 and on a cold start it can smoke up the whole yard !! It has done this 3x's that I have noticed. I first saw it and it was dark out so i assumed it was steam but, I saw a blue tint to the fog, This thing is brand new! any Ideas?

Not really. Does it consume a lot of oil between changes. I find it odd that this is not occuring all the time.

So, have you had to add any oil to it?

no, oil level is still full. I called a chevy dealer and there is a TSB already. something about having to replace the defective drivers side valve cover. this is a documented issue for 2011... wonderful....just what i need.
