Blue smoke on start-up

Postby bmacdonald64 [OP] » Feb 15 2012, 6:19pm

Is anyone else having the issue while upon cold start-up they are getting a blue oil cloud from the exhaust? I have read this is a pretty common issue among the 5.3 litre's but is it supposed to be every time on cold start-ups? Any insisght into this issue woudl be great.

Mine only has about 34k on it, and I have no problem. How many miles do you have on yours?

You are probably having oil leak into the cylinders when it sits for a long time (probably bad valve stem seals). If it only smokes for a short time I would not worry about it too much. The only other thing it might be is bad oil rings. Either way, if it goes away soon after it is started I would not worry about it too much (as long as it is not oil fowling the plugs).

That's what I figured. Sometimes it's thick and dense and other times it's just s puff. I really wasn't concerned about it since it's not a constant but wanted to see who else is having this issue. From all the info I've read on it, it's a pretty common issue for the 5.3. Some have earlier than others. I have buddy at a dealership that's seen it on brand new Silverado's rolling right off the car hauler.

I guess I am lucky, it's not doing it. Mine is a 2005 though, I'm not sure if they are having a problem out of the newer ones.
