Breaking In New Truck

Postby Stinger444 [OP] » Nov 20 2011, 8:50pm

Hey everyone, I've heard that you should change the oil in a new truck after about the first 500 miles or so but I can't find anywhere it says to do that. Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks

I think most of it is just common sense. You have a lot of metal floating around in your oil from manufacturing and the new parts wearing in. I usually go about 1k before changing the oil, just personal preference.

Also, another reason is to get the drain plug and oil filter broken loose before they completely seize on the engine. It seems both new vehicles I have owned, the filter and plug took a considerable amount of effort to remove the first time.

I changed mine at 700 miles, and switched to synthetic oil. I did the oil change after that at about 5,000 miles.

As far as other fluids, I changed the front and rear differentials at 10,000 miles. I am doing the transfer case at the next oil change (18k). I should probably do the tranny now, too.

Following all of this, I will be following the OLM (oil life monitor) for oil changes, and following the severe service schedule in the manual for everything else.

I had about 900 miles on my new mill when I pulled the oil plug the first time. Would of done it alittle sooner but I couldnt seem to find the time. It got fresh Mobil 1 Syn. At around 8600 miles now and the Oil life reads around 26% now. I figure I'm good till early spring..

I've got 800 miles on mine. So I should change it soon then. I didn't know you should change so early. I planned on using synthetic though when I do change
