Change Engine Oil Light

Change Engine Oil Light

Postby pabalab [OP] » Feb 25 2012, 1:36am

I have a 2002 Silverado 5.3L with 126,000 miles. I did an oil change with 5Qts of 5w-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic oil and 1 Qt. of Lucas Oil Stabilizer (do to a small oil leak I wanted to slow up) After about 500 miles the Change Engine Oil light comes on at start up. It stays on for about 5 seconds then goes off. The engine is running about 45 to 50 psi at idle at start up. Any ideas?

Did you reset the oil monitor when you changed the oil?

45 - 50 PSI at cold start up is normal....

Honestly I have no idea, I have never ran mine that far. You know me, I'm the old school every 3000 mile oil change guy here on the thread.

Regardless of what interval you run, shouldn't you reset the OLM at each oil change?

Yes, that's why I never know if it stays on when the time is up. I always reset it when I change the oil, and it is never close to saying it needs to be changed (usually around 50% life left).

Well from personal experience, the alert chime sounds and the oil life message stays lit for about 5 seconds each time you start the truck and then the display drops to mileage or whatever it was reading before.

I guess this truck is an experiment for me. I have always changed at 5-6k using synthetic oil. This time I am using Amsoil synthetic, and running the full distance of the OLM. If the truck blows up at 100k, you can say "I told ya so". But I bet it won't.

Anyway, back on topic, pabalab just needs to reset the OLM. Check the manual if you are not sure how to do it.
