Clean those throttle bodies!

Dirty after only 9500 miles

Clean those throttle bodies!

Postby airmobile101 [OP] » Mar 24 2011, 4:42am

Guys, I know I'm a noob, but I figured I best post this to help others out. Today I installed a Airaid MIT with a drop in K&N filter. While doing this, I decided to take off the throttle body just to do a visual inspect and to tinker. Well...... This is a new 2011 Sierra with about 9500 miles on it and I will tell you this, It was freaking dirty as hell. I cleaned with with carb cleaner and a rag. It was dirty enough where I think it would start binding after 25000-30000 miles. So........ Next time to change that air filter or toss on a CAI, you might want to inspect it ;)
And, I don't offroad either, this is strictly a highway truck.

I've never even looked at my throttle body after 71,000 miles. I have noticed lately that my vehicle will occasionally have a slight drop in idle speed but it has never stalled, hesitated or failed to have a fast idle when cold. I always use Shell or Mobil fuel and Mobil 1 oil. Most of my driving is on paved roads and I still have the original air filter.

I remember that the Colorado/Canyon have this same issue. By 30,000 miles it was gunked up, and fuel quality did not seem to have much to do with it. But like airmobile101 said, it's fairly easy to do. Change the air filter, clean the MAF and do the throttle body all at once, since you already have stuff apart.

I was going to wait until 30,000 to do that, but I may do it at 15,000 just to be safe. Good info, thanks!

Well..... it actually caught my attention to be honest. I wasn't planning to jack with it until I got my overated TB spacer :D But, as I was installing the CAI, I noticed a bunch of crud built up around the butterfly mounts. So I yanked it off and it wasn't pleasant. Dirty as hell. To be honest, it kinda pissed me off a new truck would do this. But, a simple wipe down with carb cleaner and a rag and it was all good. Im probably gonna get some MAF cleaner and check that next week when Im off.

It could very well be just my truck. Who knows......... But, it won't hurt for you guys to check. Its simple. Short guys may require a step/bucket to stand on. lol
I shit you not, I had to use my sons old potty trainer to stand on because Im so short! lol :D
