Small leak "Gas Cap" code help

Code P0442 on 2009 Silverado

Postby tmurph01 [OP] » Dec 10 2011, 1:15am

Been getting this code off and on for the past few months now. I know it is definitely not the gas cap. Any advice on what else to check out or any advice on the most common problem associated with this code..

Here's what I got with a quick google search: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0442

A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
Faulty vent o-ring seal

the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

Re: Code P0442 on 2009 Silverado

Postby rwd4evr » Sep 16 2013, 2:32pm

I have a 2008 Silverado with about 49,500 miles. On Saturday Sept. 7, I took the truck to the car wash and got the under carriage sprayed off because of a ton of mud. On Sept. 12, the check engine light came on and I scanned the system. There was a P0442 set and a P0442 pending. I'm guessing that it might be possible that the under carriage spray blasted the system and it ingested some water or created a pin hole leak in my 5 year old truck? I checked the gas cap and it seemed to be on properly.

Is there a way for water to get into the EVAP canister or purge valve? I've read that the only way to find the small leak detected by a P0442 is to get some sort of smoke test. Any ideas what that might cost? Thanks.

The "Tighten Gas Cap" message is the start. The next thing will probably a PO449 Large Leak detected code. Not to worry there's a quick and easy(and inexpensive) fix. Check this thread: P0449 Code, 2008 GMC Sierra 5.3 . And learn to stop topping off your tank when filling up. When the pump kicks off don't try to squeeze in any more gas. Don't round up to an even amount or anything.

Code P0442 on 2008 Silverado

Postby rwd4evr » Sep 16 2013, 10:12pm

So the purge valve at the tank might not be completely seating anymore and will eventually stick full open? Interesting. I'll have to check this out. I've cleared the codes and checked the gas cap.

I just bought the truck in mid-August so I have no idea if the previous owner topped off the tank or not. I haven't topped it off and I have no idea if my wife has. I'll have to get under the truck to inspect all of the lines. I was wondering if at almost 50,000 miles, it was time to replace the Evap Canister itself.

Code P0442 on 2008 Silverado

Postby rwd4evr » Sep 16 2013, 11:11pm

There is a way to test the cap for the PA state emission test. I know a guy that has the device that can test gas caps. I would assume that would be able to test all of the functions that the cap is supposed to perform. I'll check with him before spending money on parts. thanks!

tmurph01,

I can check to see if you have any open recalls that may be the cause of why you are seeing codes. Please just private message me your vehicle identification number and I will check into that information.

Thank you,

Code P0442 on 2008 Silverado

Postby rwd4evr » Sep 18 2013, 11:02pm

Well, I had the gas cap checked today and it failed the test - whatever the test is. So, I made a trip to a local Chevy dealer to see if I could get a replacement gas cap instead of ordering on-line. When I asked for a gas cap, the counter guy said that there were 2 different caps for a 2008 Silverado and he needed the VIN. I produced the number and the parts guy said "I have one in stock, we've been selling a ton of these recently." He said "I hear that the ethanol is causing a lot of problems." and then he asked "Have you replaced the filler neck recently?" When I told him that I just bought the truck in August and I had no idea if the previous owner had replaced the neck, he didn't have anything else to offer and I asked why he wanted to know. He said that it was something that he heard might help with a P0442 problem. The cap with 7% sales tax cost $32.41. I put it in on.

I then took my newest code reader, an ACTRON PocketScan Plus to erase the codes. I've had a P0442 set and a P0442 pending. I can't seem to clear them! The scan tool tells me that they are erased but then I rescan for codes and they are still there. I took out my old scan tool and it also tells me that there are still a P0442 set and P0442 pending. I used the old tool to erase the codes and the tool also told me "DONE". I scanned the truck again and the codes are still there. All of this is without ever starting the truck. this is just with the ignition on then off and then on again for each new scan tool.

What is going on!?!? I have never had a vehicle reset codes without even starting it once after supposedly clearing them. Does a 2008 and newer have more security in the software such that these scan tools purchased at a place like Auto Zone can't function?
