Cold air intake, Flowmaster 50 muffler or Programmer?

Postby NSInspector [OP] » Oct 11 2011, 2:44pm

I'm trying to decide between a cold air intake, a flowmaster 50 muffler and programmer. Any Ideas? I want to give it a little more sound but I don't want it to be obnoxious, from what I've been reading here; it looks like the flowmaster 50 will do that. I've also heard that a CAI will give it that throaty sound too, but i heard the CAI needs the muffler to work correctly?

Looking for a little help on where to go next with it, this is the first time I am going to do any significant mods to a truck and I'd like to get the biggest bang for my buck. I'm more leaning to the CAI or the exhaust to get it to sound a little better but would like to hear some oppinions.

Thanks

the intake will help some but if you want the rumble and to hear it and others to hear it just running around town i would get the muffler first but if you are looking for the power the programmer would probably do more for you than the exhaust and intake. as far a power and fuel economy.. just my .02

the programmer will help much more then the exhaust and intake. which i dont have yet. i do have a flowmaster 40 series and a K&N CAI on my truck now and it sounds great. but you dont need the muffler for the intake to work properly at all. id suggest the intake and exhaust first

I've got all three on my truck. That's a great setup- relatively cheap, good sound, and lots of HP.

Thanks! Power isn't really the issue for me right now, the last thing I need is another speeding ticket! So I think it will be the muffler and intake first. I have been looking online and I see the K&N CAI wil run me about $400 but I have seen a few on ebay for around $200 to my door; they're a no name company though. Has anyone had any experiences with these or should I go with the K&N?

Is the flowmaster 50 the right muffler for the sound I want? I have read mixed reviews on the loudness of it, some say that it is perfect but some are saying that its not much better than stock?

I've got a 50 series... the 6.0 is already a really loud engine, but the 50 is a step or two above stock. Not too loud, but it's a nice sound. It really howls when you stomp on it.

I personally use Spectre intakes, since they're a lot cheaper than the big name brands (I think mine was $120). Check out Autoanything.com for the intake\exhaust- they always have great deals going on.

I've done the "AIRAID" CAI with the Magnaflow 15618 muffler and I'm pleased with results. Next is a programmer to allow engine to use the installs I've done.
For the first option, I'd suggest the programmer 1st as you will buy it sooner or later-----Good luck

I'd definitely do Spectre or Airaid; they are both good and cost less. If you really want to save a little more...don't take out the stock air box; just get a K&N panel air filter and put a modular intake tube on instead of the stck tube that is restictive and has those useless resonator chambers. I agree with the others about getting the breathing exercises (intake&exhaust) done first then program/tune. That should give you gains in MPG, HP and DB.
K&N with Airaid MIT & Custom RAI, Flow Master 40s-True Dual Exhaust, 8K HID low beams & Fogs,BFG 285/75R16 TKO, JL Audio 700 watts 10" sub in stealthbox , 400w Dash Inverter, Upgraded electrical: Alternator & Batteries

I'm running a Flowmaster 50 on one vehicle and a Magnaflow on another. Neither one with cats. The Magna flow is way less annoying. You never know how a muffler is going to suit you till you hear it in person. Cool air will help anything and would be my first improvement.
