common issues with the 5.3L engine?

common issues with the 5.3L engine?

Postby jamoka3 [OP] » Dec 18 2011, 5:39am

I stumbled on the Castech cracked head issues that effect the 5.3L, how common is this issue and is there a tell tail sign to determine if you have this issue?
Is there a way to check the engine in the truck, Im going to look at a 05 with 85k miles at a dealer, and I want to check if this is a problem or not?
Its kinda a big deal before i buy this truck...

Well if it's any indication, it has not been discussed very often around here. based in that, I do not think it is common at all.

I just traded in my 2007 Suburban with the 5.3l in it and it had 136000 mile on it. No problem with that motor. I like it so much that I bought a new 2011 Silverado 4x4 Crew cab!

I agree about reliability of the engine. I have a 2001 1500 Sierra with 332000... the body is shot but the engine still runs ;)

I have the cracked castech heads and the disappearing coolant issue.. but it is not very often. I have 150k on the ticker and this engine is as strong as ever. I maintain it rigorously and put the best of the best into it. And it repays me two fold. Just because tou have the issue doesnt mean you condemn the engine.

Had a 2006 5.3 with the Castech heads drivers side cracked at 85k miles. First thought it was a head casket talked to a buddy that runs a independent shop he told me to have the heads checked for a crack. Sure enough drivers side cracked. He said he had seen several. Go to GM-Trucks.com do a search in the 99-13 section several threads about them there. This happened 5 or 6 years ago. I just put some new heads on it later sold it to my nephew still running today probably got 150k on it now.
