My AFM is SEAMLESS and I can achieve 20mpg highway if I keep it and 70mph or below. Someone needs to explain to me how turning off the 4 cylinder capability and having it run on 8 cylinders all the time increases the gas mpg. It seems the opposite would be true.

I do understand it makes the whole powertrain shall we say "clunky" around town, that I understand and experience.

and yeah, if you do a LOT of highway driving, DOD/AFM helps... but if you don't, then it hurts.. plus, it causes oil burning issues, which GM even has a TSB about, it's a known issue.... when switching between 4/8 cylinder modes, it allows oil to blow by... many many people have seen 1-3 quarts of oil gone between oil changes because of it...

and like I say, if you do 50/50, even 40/60 of town/highway driving, the AFM/DOD doesn't help at all.. I myself, as well as many many others, have actually gained mileage by disabling it... for me and my car, I gained 2 mpg... I do about 50/50 town/highway driving during a typical week..

and I'm talking about lifetime average mpg, not the instant mpg you see when you're on the highway - that's not the same thing... on the highway with instant mpg showing, I get 24-27 mpg... but overall mpg average is 20 - 20.5mpg... with DOD/AFM on, my overall avg. was 18....

Yes, but the "clunky" is a combination of the crude (needs some refinement) 6 speed transmission, and some part AFM AND the yoke clunk problem in the drive train/rear end.

How much is what?

I still got better mileage than stock without DOD because I live on the back roads, It would have performed worse with it on because it was always switching in and out constantly and bogging the engine down.

I commute about 100 miles per day almost 98% highway. I still plan on getting a tuner to shut it off when i get back from this deployment. I can notice it when it cycles between the 2 modes, a very noticeable "shift" not to mention you can feel the diff in the steering wheel and gas pedal....especially the gas pedal you get a vibration

Its amazing how it is not noticeable in some trucks but very pronounced in others...qc could have been a bit better i guess

There is a TSB for the slip yoke issue at the front of the drive train. GM will replace it....My 6 speed is flawless with afm disabled and transmission settings changed. These trucks are sadly programmed for economy from the factory and have a ton of potential.
Take your truck to a dealership and the clunk will be gone, can't say the same for the AFM causing the tranny to shift like crap though. That can be fixed with an inTune, give Lew a call he sells then AND does custom tuning. Can't find a better tuning package for the price.
