Does anyone like the 5.3 afm engine

What is not to love...There are very few engines out there that will give you what the 5.3 does! You get over 300 hp and if you drive properly can get 20 mpg and over on the highway. On top of all that you still have a motor that will last 300,000 miles if properly taken care of! GM LS Series Engines are the most swapped motors for a reason!

I agree with you... From what I've read some of the early adopters had problems, but GM has made modifications to fix those problems. I've also read that this engine is sensitive to having clean oil. I'm not too worried with the 5y/100k warranty... Has anyone actually put 300k or even 150k on this engine yet?

Just bought a 2011 crewcab Z71, Love the truck so far. I stepped out of a F150. If you want engine problems, get a 5.4 Triton. The Triton was getting about 11.9 mpg, so the 5.3 vortec is a welcome change The Salesman said i had to us dexos oil or it would void the warranty

Do a search on this site about Dexos. It is not all that you think it is, and you have options....
Just sayin...

Now how many posts do you see on this or other boards from people saying, "Hey, I've had my truck for xxxxxx miles and NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM WITH THE MOTOR!!" Very few. Why? Because people tend to post only when there's a problem. So you haven't really done any "research", you've read a bunch of posts from a non-representative, tiny, self-selected minority of owners reporting problems that may or may not be the motor's fault. Actual "research" would require a statistically-valid random sample of owners from which you could draw some supportable conclusions that included estimates of error in your results.

Bottom line: Stop worrying about nothing. If there were genuine widespread problems you'd see the Feds involved and the word "recall" popping up a lot.

GM sells between 40,000 and 50,000 (Silverado/Sierra combined) each and every month. Outsells the F150 some months when you combine the Chevy/GMC makes.

There are those who cruise the internet searching for those having issues with the 5.3 AFM. It's a shame they will not spend the money for a tune verses being miserable.

For those of you who find the AFM annoying when cruising at speeds of 45-60 mph down blvds. or roadways .....Note: The AFM will not drop down to 4 cylinder operation while in manual shift mode in any gear under 6th. In other words if you don't want the system gyrating between 4 and 8 cylinder mode until you are ready for it to ,you have ultimate control. Try it for yourself with the info selector set to monitor the AFM. I did this myself for several runs. Even the local service managers and techs were not aware of the design parameters.Neither was the GM tech assistance line. After all ,they didn't design it. Manual mode ,once you get a feel for it, will also afford better throttle response for mild spirited driving as well. as you have direct control of rpm and shift points. Now mind you ,I don't drive around in manual all the time or even most of the time. However, when I do drive down a stretch of road at 40-50 and up to 60 mph for several miles and don't want the AFM kicking in ,I just drop it in manual mode and cruise in any gear except 6th. Give it a whirl. Cheers.

Yes, I have commented on this in the past. It definitely keeps it smoother. Also, when it's cold out, I will often put it in manual mode (M5) so the engine warms up more quickly and evenly. Once I get on the highway, I put it in Drive.

I've got about 9750 mile on my 5.3 and I really like it...it can be sluggish when in v4 mode but it has gobs of power once it kicks out and back into v8 mode

Yea,EKinMN, This manual mode is a really nice feature once you get the feel for it. My truck only has around 550 miles on it and I'm liking it better each day.Otherwise so far the transition from 8 cyl. to 4 cyl. operation is seamless. Without the info monitor it takes a more tuned ear and feel than I have to detect it. ;)

Does anyone like the 5.3 afm engine

Postby 1stsilverado » Jan 06 2012, 4:11pm

I have a 2011 5.3 afm and it's a love hate. I like the added fuel economy but hate the vibration and the switch from 8 to 4 to 8.
