Does anyone like the 5.3 afm engine

Does anyone like the 5.3 afm engine

Postby ewrob [OP] » Aug 17 2011, 6:18pm

Hello im new to this forum,i have a 2011 sle sierra with the 5.3 afm engine,it seems that most of the discussions are that no one likes this motor, what i have read is around 30,000 miles these turn into oil burners and that you will have to replace the lifters,i know it is under warranty for 100,000 miles, but if mine turns out like the ones ive read about its going to be a lot of aggravation,if its true about this motor i just cant figure out why gm would mess up a good engine like the 5.3 for a mile to a gallon, and to have a lot of customers mad.if its true that gm has a inferrior engine than what im used to i will not buy another gm product.im hoping there is some out there that are having good luck with afm,let me know thanks

So after all the research that you found negative and you still bought the truck?

Get a tuner than turns off the AFM feature and you won't have to worry since you're not worried about a couple of miles per gallon. I am happy with mine with 6,500 miles and plan on tuning it with a Predator in December/January.

I have a little over 1000 miles on my new truck with the 5.3 afm engine and love it so far. I've heard that the engines become oil burners as well, but I'm waiting to see what happens.

I'll probably tune it with the HpTuners software I have once they release the upgrade for the 2011's.

I have an '08 with AFM, I bought it used with 45500 miles and have almost 46500 on it now with that 1000 driven on new oil, so for no oil usage. Every once in a while I'll get a split second cold start lifter tick but not every time. I like the truck and hope it last me a long time.

I had a '07 Silverado with a 5.3 AFM with 45,000 miles on it when I traded it. It ran just like when I picked it up new. Did not burn any oil.

I had an 08 with that engine traded it at 48,000 with no oil issues. I have the same engine in my 10 and I have 15,000 since November and no problems.
