Engine code LY5

Thinking of building

Engine code LY5

Postby griff364 [OP] » Apr 02 2013, 4:40am

So I took a step back and thought about my goals for my daily driven truck...

I used this wikipedia link to learn a little about my engine and need you all to confirm its accuracy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Vortec_engine

I've looked in my glove box and I have the LC9 version of the 5.3L. I want to confirm that the LY5 is going to be non DoD and non flex fuel, which should make it a cast iron block. Since I have a flex fuel vehicle, I have an aluminum block.

I have some serious goals for an engine. I'm talking over 1000hp. I don't think this is practical for me to do on a daily driven truck. That's why I'm thinkin about finding an engine out of a wrecked Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra, or Yukon with the engine code LY5 and taking my time to build the living hell out of it. I'm thinking forged pistons and rods, ported heads, stronger cam than I already put in my current truck, and built up heads. And of course the proper fuel modifications to support it. 70+ lb injectors, fuel rails, fuel pump, etc. I'd like an engine that I can run 20+ lbs of boost on.

I don't think taking my truck out of commission every time I put a mod on is reliable. I'd like to build one up and swap it in when it's done. I don't want to change wiring harnesses or anything, that is why I'm choosing to stick with a 5.3. What other vehicles come with this engine? I've heard 2010+ camaros do, but wikipedia only lists the abovementioned vehicles.

Am I way off base for thinkin about doing this? Am I on the right track? What will bolt on to my 4l80 transmission? What other concerns do I need to consider? Are there any other places to look for engines other than my local salvage yard?

I have lots of questions. I appreciate all of your input!

Will that bolt up to my transmission? Are the motor mount points the same? What will need to change electrically?
