Engine Idle at 500 rpm

low idle speed and sluggish

Engine Idle at 500 rpm

Postby farside1 [OP] » Nov 10 2011, 3:32pm

So I get into my truck this morning 2010 Silverado 5.3L and the rpm gauge reads 500 rpm. Is this normal? I seem to remember that it would idol at 1000 rpm but I can't remember. Truck seems kinda sluggish and I've been trying to drive on egg shells to see if I can up the gas mileage but I seem to only be getting 12.0 to 12.7 in around town driving. Not sure if this is normal as I've read elsewhere that the gauges on these trucks are not the most accurate. The truck isn't stalling out on me or anything so I don't know if I should just chalk it up to a bad gauge or what? Any advice is appreciated. I have an appointment with the dealer on Monday and want some info in case they tell me there is "nothing wrong." Thanks.

Most trucks start up at about 1000 RPM, and then drop down when it warms up. Although mine is a lot different than yours, I can tell you it will idle down to about 500 RPM when warm. However, if it's been acting sluggish, you may need that checked out (or just spend more money on more HP ).

Put in some better fuel (Shell or Mobil premium) and just DRIVE it. Very little extra cost to you and it cleans as you drive. Your truck will thank you!

Generally speaking these injected computer controlled engines have pretty low ldle speeds. I want to say the spec is something like 600 rpm +/- 100 warm. But don't quote that.

Reasoning is emissions related and the truck will automatically run it (choak it) @ ~1K +/- cold until enough heat has been generated then drop it down.

But as wisely suggested above, good fuel additives can be really helpful. I'll add chevron's techron to the list.

Farside, we have the same trucks (roughly). At cold start, mine jumps to 1400-1500. It quickly drops down to 1,000. After it warms up, it is consistent at 500-600. So I think yours is pretty normal.

If it is sluggish, I agree with using a Top Tier fuel, and a can of Sea Foam or Amsoil Performance Plus in the next tank.
