Engine noise

Engine noise

Postby j-dawg54 [OP] » May 11 2013, 1:07pm

I noticed this engine noise from the passenger side of the engine after I changed both belt tensioners yesterday. The truck is a 2007 and has almost 60k on it now.

What do you think that ticking noise is? I have no warranty whatsoever so any repair would be expensive. I'm pretty sure I didn't have this knock back in January when I put in Pennzoil Platinum for the first time. Could this be the result of PP cleaning out any sludge and buildup?

Sounds like lifter noise to me. What kind of a filter did you use?

I used an AC Delco PF-48 filter.

After reading some other threads I might as well add some more information before its being asked for.

The oil pressure is about 40 psi idle and 50-55 psi during driving.

The sound is originating from the passenger side of the vehicle whatever that is. I noticed that on the video the driver side sound is just wind noise from the alternator making it hard to hear the engine.

The truck drives great and there is nothing else than this ticking sound at this point. Compared to other videos I've seen on youtube I would consider it faint and not really that loud.

Have you taken it out and driven it kinda hard since the oil change? Since the oil pressure is good, you may want to try that. It might just be a bit of trash in the engine clogging the feed to the lifters a bit.

I would say that I have stepped on it a couple of times, last time yesterday up to about 90-95 that was on my way home after making the video and I checked for the noise when I parked at home and it was still there.

I am going out on a mcdonalds run in a couple of hours so I will check it again then.

Still the same after a 20 mile drive. I shifted into 2nd and revved her up but when I got home and checked it was still the same noise.

It sounds like lifter noise for sure. Maybe you can try replacing the oil filter with another one. There was a thread hre earlier where smeone did that and it fixed the problem (Althought it was not an AC Delco filter).

Do you think it will hurt the engine to drive it like this for a bit? An oil change is $160 if I do it myself so I wanna make sure that everything else has been checked out first.

Also, do you think an engine flush is a good idea just before changing the oil?

I'm thinking about checking the exhaust manifolds bolts and that the spark plugs are tight. I googled and found people with what sounded like lifter noise but it was actually either the exhaust manifold leaking (broken bolt) or a loose spark plug.

If you do end up changing oil, I'd definitely recommend using an engine flush. I'd put in a can of Sea Foam and run it for 20 minuted at idle. Then you'll know it's not junk clogging up the oil passageways.

Why would a oil change cost 160$. That's ways 2 much money aint it? Or try alittle lucas oil stabilizer if u change the oil. Maybe half a quart or a quart. I put a whole quart in mine when I got it and made my lifter tick go away even during the winter when it was worse
