engine pinging

Hello all, new here.

I have a 2006 Sierra 1500 5.3. Under hard acceleration (like highway speed then accelerating to pass) i am getting some knock. I tried to step up to 89 to no avail, and the amount i drive and spend a month on gas already i cant afford 91 lol. I do have a feeling the ethanol bullshit is to blame for the mileage and possibly knock, but the engine does also have 175k on it. That being said, other than that it runs great.

Im wondering what else i can do to remedy this. I remember back in the military i had a 1987 Monte Carlo SS with a 355, and if i wanted to change the timing i just turned the distributor...not so easy on this new stuff haha. I am wonder if it is the knock sensors, but being a big job id rather not do all that if that wont for sure fix the problem. I have tried sea foam, i changed the plugs and wires at 130k and still getting the knock.

any ideas?

Sounds like you might have water in your fuel. Try some dry gas and switch stations and brand of gas you get. Let us know if any of this works. Also make sure the plugs are gapped to spec.

Is the check engine light on? You could have a problem with a sensor or possibly the EGR system.

you defiantly have something wrong if your pinging on 87 but as far as octain I found on my 5.3L that going to 93 payed for its self in fuel mileage.

Well i normally use shell but now i see on this forum that shell is garbage. I'll try switching to Exxon or something

I also have no check engine light on. I suppose i could still scan it for codes.
