Engine Surge/ RPM Fluctuation

Engine Surge/ RPM Fluctuation

Postby hoogiez28 [OP] » Apr 21 2012, 3:07am

Hi Guys,

New to the forum and I love what I have seen and read.

I have been having a problem recently with my '03 Silverado. I recently put on a Super 40 series Flowmaster and I love the sound!

However, since I have installed the muffler, I have noticed that my engine is surging slightly and the RPMs do not stay constant and fluctuate (within a couple hundred rpms). This only seems to happen in overdrive, and the exhaust note is driving my NUTS! I can't be certain if this is a new problem, I don't think I would have noticed the slight change with the stock exhaust....

I have seen a few other posts on this, but none have helped me so far. I do not have the AFM that some people have been blaming this symptom on. Everything else with the truck seems fine. Nothing noticeably different in the tranny or shifts. Any other thoughts?? MAF sensor? Dirty throttle body? Is it perhaps the exhaust???? (hope not). Any insight would be greatly appreciated

I noticed the same thing on my 01 with magna flow muffler. All I have other than that is a drop in k&n . I've cleaned my maf and throttle body and had no change. I did replace my stock plugs and wires that had 143k miles and noticed that it seemed to help some.

I think it may have something to do with the back pressure the stock exhaust provides which might be different with the aftermarket exhaust. I am in the middle of replacing my y-pipe with the catylitic converters and O2 sensors and sense I dont have it in there I have noticed the same issue. I am gonna have it replaced on Oct. 15 or so making it stock again. Without those catylitic converters and O2 sensors it runs really rich but hopefully everything will fix itself once the oe y-pipe is installed

I had my exhaust fixed and the problem went away. It was stock and I just put the stock exhaust back on.

check the EGR AND THE TPS. SPRING in the TPS MIGHT BE GETTING WEAK AS THE YEARS HAVE GONE BY. when you did the muffler did you reoil the air filter? I recoiled my filter with the wrong oil for the filter(k&n instead of airaid) it plugged it and ran with a ruff ideal as well. few things that came to mind.

I had a similar condition with 100% oem exhaust and intake.

Found a few leaks, fixed them and all is well.
Leaks can't hide from the scanner/scope!
