Fuel Filter Replacement

Fuel Filter Replacement

Postby fiendcbr [OP] » Mar 30 2011, 5:02am

I will be replacing the fuel filter on my 99 1500 5.3 tomorrow. The truck is hesitating when I hit the trottle, but then it seems to clear up. I just bought this truck from an owner that was just using the truck to launch a boat in the summer. So it sat a bit in the winter months. So I am really hoping that it is bad fuel. I have changed the plugs with some AC Delco, changed the air filter and added some Lucas fuel injector cleaner. I am going to clean the throttle body this weekend also. I was wondering if I can disconnect the fuel pump fuse and crank it until the pressure is lost. If so, I am good. If not, will I need to get a pressure gauge?

The way I relieve fuel pressure is by wrapping a rag around the fuel rail by the Schrader valve, where a pressure gauge would install, and depress the valve with a small screwdriver until the hissing stops.

I will definitely try that method. And to repressurize, just crank it, shut it off and turn it on. Correct me if I am wrong.

You are correct. Just energize the fuel pump by turning the key to the run position. Cycle it a few times before starting it. Should be fine.

Yes, actually just turn the key to run, NOT start, and the fuel pump will click for few seconds, then start the engine and check for leaks.

You can also unplug the fuel pump from the top of the tank.
