Gas Milage 5.3L active fuel management

Everyone seems to be getting better with tune, intake and exhaust. How does that stuff effect the warranty? My truck is brand new I'm not trying to void the warranty I got for 1mpg or 2mpg.

Well, I just bought a 2012 1500 ext. cab 4x4 last month, and I really like the truck except for one major item- my gas mileage SUCKS. I have about 1400 miles on it now, and I am getting 13.6 around town, and 14.6 on the highway. I have taken two 300 mile round trips with it, and it got 14.6 both times at around 70-73 mph with the cruise on. My 2002 Silverado got a best of about 16.25 on a good day, so one of the reasons for buying a new truck was so I could get (hopefully) close to the 21 mpg they are claiming- and I see that a lot of you are getting. I never dreamed that I would be going BACKWORDS with gas mileage by buying a 10 year newer truck. I didn't spend $35,000 for THAT. I stopped at the dealer this past Thursday to complain about it, and got the standard "needs to be broke in, let's see what you're getting at 6,000 miles, cold weather, winter blend gas, blah, blah, blah."
By the way, I drive like a grandma, and have the 3.42 rear gear (my 2002 had the 3.73). I do have an aluminum cap on the truck, and some tools in the bed, so probably equal to a passenger full time (just like the 2002). The The 2002 was rated at 12/18 city/hwy, so I at least thought I could reasonably assume I would get 16/19 when the truck is rated at 15 and 21. If it doesn't get any better than 14.6, I don't know what I'm going to do. I didn't think I was signing on for such crappy gas mileage.
Disgruntled Silverado owner.

I just changed where I got my gas at. I used to go to the mom and pops gas station and got 19.4 best almost all highway. Just took my truck on a 220 mile haul and got gas at a sheetz and got 20.3 on the way home. My truck still ain't to 1000 miles yet so I'm not too sure about the "broke in"

That is my point- why with 2 almost identical trucks is the mpg so different? I mean, come on, that's just shy of 6 mpg better than I'm getting! If it is true that they need to be "broke in", am I eventually going to get 20.3? What are you going to be getting then- 26? :P
There are mpg complaints on another truck forum where some guys are getting about the same as me. One has 8000 mile on his truck now with no improvement. What amount of miles is considered "broke in" nowadays? I just find it hard to believe that even brand new, I can't even get on the highway what they're claiming you'll get in the city.

I wouldn't be happy ither if I was you! I'm not sure what they consider "broke in" ither. Does ur truck go into V4 mode at all? My mother in law has same truck as me but its a 08 and driving the same roads at same speed hers don't drop to 4cyl nearly like mine does and she gets almost 17mpg to my 19-20

2012 ext cab 4WD.

I was getting 19.5 driving back and forth to work. I drive a back road at 45mph to work to avoid traffic lights and city traffic. I too stare at the V4 more than I watch the road. I'm very good at getting it to switch into V4 mode by lifting my foot a tick.

Now that the newness has worn off and I'm driving on the beach several times a week to surf, I'm getting 18.3 -18.5

I have a tonneau cover.

On one trip on the interstate, with surfboards hanging over the tail gate, the milage dropped to 16.5. The truck clearly doesn't like aero drag.

I'm glad I chose a tonneau over my usual choice, a truck cap, on this one. I think it helps the milage.

Pretty much only when coasting. Never at speed or with the cruise on.
