Going in for new lifters

Going in for new lifters

Postby 6Sixathome [OP] » Sep 21 2011, 10:51pm

Well I went and talked to my local Chevy/Buick dealer service dept today and told him what my truck would do some of the time with the short term cold start lifter tick and he knew exactly what was going on because he has replaced the lifters in three other trucks before with the same issue, he also said it will only get worse as time goes by and as the cold weather comes. He said no prob, I'll order the parts and it will be a two day job. So that's where I'm at with it and I'll report back on the job.

I hope he's doing lifters AND cam, because new lifters on a used cam will not last.

Going in for new lifters

Postby Jrluz14 » Sep 21 2011, 11:40pm

I hope he ordered LS7 lifters which is also what GM dealerships are using as the "problem solver". Also, unless your cam is extremely worn, new lifters on a used cam will be fine.

I asked about the cam and he (the tech actually doing the work on my truck) said that once the lifters are out he can inspect the cam for wear which he thought there would'nt be anything significant since the lifter tick was so short in duration and not at every start. As for the LS7 lifters I dont know, I'll have to ask when they do call me to say the parts are in. Would all the parts come in a 'kit' like head bolts, gaskets, lifters, all the things needed for the job?

LS7 lifters will not work the 5.3L engine. AFN engines require 8 special lifers.

Attention:
This bulletin only applies to the AFM V8 engines listed above. It DOES NOT apply to Non-AFM Engines. If you are dealing with a Non-AFM engine that is experiencing a similar noise, please refer to Engine Mechanical > Diagnostic Information and Procedures > Symptoms in SI.

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2011 model year. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 10-06-01-007A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Condition

Some customers may comment on an engine valve lifter tick noise that occurs after the engine has been shut off for at least two hours. The tick noise may last from two seconds to ten minutes.

Cause

This condition may be caused by any of the following:
• Aerated oil in the valve lifter body, resulting in the valve lifter being unable to purge the air quickly.
• A low engine oil level or incorrect oil viscosity.
• Dirty or contaminated oil.
• A low internal valve lifter oil reservoir level.
• Debris in the valve lifter.
• A high valve lifter leak down rate.
Correction

If the SI diagnostics do not isolate the cause of this valve lifter tick noise and normal oil pressure is noted during the concern, perform the following steps:
1. Inspect the engine oil condition and level. Refer to Owner Manual > Service and Appearance Care > Checking Things Under the Hood > Description and Operation > Engine Oil in SI. ⇒If the engine oil is more than one quart low, an incorrect oil viscosity is being used or if poor quality/contamination is observed, change the oil and filter.
2. Note: Allow at least a two hour soak time between engine OFF and start up when evaluating the tick noise.
3. Start the engine and evaluate the valve lifter tick noise. ⇒If the valve lifter tick noise is still present, replace all 16 valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement in SI.
Parts Information

Note: A V8 AFM engine requires 8 AFM lifters and 8 non-AFM lifters for a total of 16 lifters.
Part Number Description Qty
12576400 Non AFM Hydraulic Valve Lifter 8
12632143 AFM Hydraulic Valve Lifter 8

Z15, that's the same document he showed me when we were talking, so it looks like were on the same page.

I dropped her off today to be "tore down" and ready for the new lifters to be installed tomorrow when they arrive. I saw the parts list and the #'s for the new lifters were the same as the document that Z15 posted.

I got the SIERRA back this afternoon and so far it sounds great. If I was'nt looking for exhaust or head bolts with socket marks on them you could never tell except for quiet lifters and a clean engine, the tech did an AWESOME job. I'm glad to have my truck back, because I had to drive my daughters PT Crusier while it was getting fixed :(

Is the lifter problem a common issue? Another forum also said it is very prevalent. I thought the 5.3 was a great engine
