Hazards override speed limiter?

Hazards override speed limiter?

Postby Z71Silvy [OP] » May 29 2012, 3:20am

I was doing my normal cruising of youtube and ran across a couple comments that said if you turn your hazards on then the speed limiter is disabled on some GM vehicles... has anyone else ever experienced this first hand? Just thought I would check before trying to come up with an excuse to do 100mph. Not condoning those speeds in our truck, just curious if this was true or a myth...

Idk if it's true or not, but I'll definitely try it sometime I get the chance and let y'all know. I hit the limiter once on the interstate it was so fun! Probably not the safest thing though.

Just so I would know where it was set, I hit my limiter on a wide open Colorado interstate. For the curious it was 114 mph and the truck was running smooth as glass. Please don't anyone notify the State Patrol!! :)

Its 97 mph on nnbs stock.

I am mainly curious because this seems like an interesting thought by the engineers if true - - that if a person were driving very fast with their hazards on that they may actually need to go faster.

I've had my truck up to 180 km/h and she ran there pretty good, nice and smooth...Kind of tempted to test out that hazard theory though...just gotta fill er up first!

Hey EK,

Are you saying that those of us who want to go beyond 100mph are hockey sticks??? LOL

I've never been called a "hockey stick", so I guess that is a new one... I for one used a programmer "specifically" to take the 105mph speed limiter off... Now understand that I have "V" rated tires (rated to 149mph) and some other mods... But having a 6.0L VHO being held back at 105mph was just no good to me. Why have a high horsepower vehicle and not use it?? My truck runs very smoothly at 100mph+

I have run the truck to 4,400rpm in 3rd gear = 110mph indicated. I continued to 4,200rpm in 4th gear = 152mph (calculated). Speedo only goes to 120mph, and I did not have my GPS on at the time. Now I realize that a calculated 152mph is probably more like 140mph or so (trans slippage, windage, etc). Either way things were going by fast, but at no time did the truck seemed unstable, twitchy, or out of control. I can't say that for my 1967 GTO, or 1969 SS Camaro at those speeds. Those "old" muscle cars were a real handful, and did not encourage confidence. 110mph on my 1974 Kawasaki Z1 was also un-nerving as well...

So there are those who like to push the speed envelope, or to see just want their trucks/vehicles can do... I think, those using their trucks to rock climb, are taking a bigger chance. Just my opinion though..

:D
