its a high efficiency filter lol....In all honesty..im not really sure..i know on mine on my 04 it actually has a vacuum operated solenoid that shows when it needs to be changed..and the filter still looks good after 30k miles..

It's a filter element with more pleats and more paper surface area. Basically the part is deeper than the standard filter. It used to be that the filter "housing" was the same for vehicles with or without the option. If you want to upgrade, and you currently do not have the option, just take out your filter and match it with the other part. I am sure it will work. GM made lots of money from this option for many years and you can upgrade just by changing to the larger element. I hope this helps.
