High Oil Pressure.

High Oil Pressure.

Postby Camdonite [OP] » Nov 05 2011, 3:36pm

I recently gave my truck an oil change with Mobil 1 synthetic and a Mobil 1 filter. Since changing it I've noticed my oil pressure is around 60psi for the first 15-20 minutes after start up. Then it will drop down between 40-50psi. Is this something I should be worried about? Is it just the oil that makes it run at a higher pressure?

What kind of oil were you running before? This sounds like it's related to normal operation and you should see some drop after the engine warms up and the thermostat opens.

I don't know what kind of oil was in it before. This is the first oil change I've done since buying the truck. I assume it was AC Delco or what ever GM uses.

I wouldn't worry about it. I see oil pressure as high as 80 psi under load. Just continue to monitor it.

What weight did you use?

Also - the cold weather will have some impact on the pressure as well. Overall not something of concern.

I'd say it's normal. I use Valvoline 5w30 and an AC Delco filter in mine and it does the same thing. I wouldnt worry about it. If it drops low, then thats's something to worry about.

Mine is pretty much the same as the OP. The question here for me is, what was the gauge doing before the change to Mobil 1? Was it different, or did you just not notice it? Because what you are seeing now sounds completely normal.

Same here 40 psi at idle and almost 60 psi while driving, I'd say it's normal and he probably did'nt notice the guage as much before as to when you change the oil, you want to see what the guage reads.

Generally speaking what causes this is a greater viscosity then what was in there before. Just because a product is labeled ‘5w30’ doesn’t mean it will remain within that range based on use and temps.

Simply enough the thicker the oil the more pressure. Though it may be obvious to some, I’ve discovered many people don’t understand the ‘W’ stands for Winter, meaning in 5w30 will effectively be a 30 weight oil when really cold, 5 weight when warm/hot.
