Intake kit VS K&N drop in filter

Intake kit VS K&N drop in filter

Postby busted081500 [OP] » Feb 16 2012, 3:59am

how does a common CAI kit (banks, volant, bullydog, aem) compare to a drop in K&N air filter. My truck is a 2008 silverado 5.3 Z71 6 inch lift 35's flowmaster 40 series with turn down and diablo intune. just curious if its worth the money and if it will make much of a difference over what it is now with the K&N drop in.

somebody had a chart on here awhile back. the coldest air actually came from the stock airbox with a drop-in k/n filter. i'd suggest a stock airbox, drop-in k/n filter and a smooth air tube from the MAF sensor to throttlebody.

Not sure if you have the high volume air box on your truck.. If you do, save your money. The drop K+N wont do much or anything preformance wise to speak of. If you dont have the High Capacity air box , it cant hurt dropping $50 for a little better flow.

yeah I already have the drop in Ill just stick with it it cant be that much of a significant difference.....I dont know why I contemplate it even really to be honest with you I had a 98 f150 before with pretty much EVERY bolt on appliction available intake, throttlebody, throttlebody spacer, headers, programmer, exhaust and I never noticed that much of a difference......but it was a 5.4 single valve (claim to fame weak) lol. but it lasted me 220000 miles and was running strong when I sold it. I will re -evaluate performance after I get my gears in.

Re: Intake kit VS K&N drop in filter

Over the years I put K&N filters in every thing from ATVs, Harley's, Miata's, V8's and never really seen any noticeable HP or MPG increase and it took me that long to figure out the hype was all a waste of money, purchasing the over priced filters and I probably did more harm than good as I don't think they really filter or flow that well and with modern day vehicle electronics and fuel injection you run the risk if fouling the MAF sensors with the oil used on the filter which would cause inaccurate air flow readings resulting in reductions in HP and MPG both of what K&N are promising to be increased with the filters? I will never use an oiled filter again. On present day model GM trucks I feel the best option to be using the OEM High capacity filter (Z71) in the factory air box and adding a AIRAID MIT tube.

K&N fans will swearer by the filters and the CAI's but I just wish I had the hundreds of dollars I spent on them over the years. I do have a few K&N filter stickers in the tool box I will sell for .60 each, hoping to re coop some of the funds spent. :)

And it is not a hi flow air box it is a high cap filter with deeper pleats

I am in the same debate about this but I decided to go with the CAI over the drop in because I have tried them both and the CAI works better for me. But some info for you on K&N filters the dropin does about 2-3 HP and their CAI does 10-15 HP according to there sight. I would recommend the CAI for you since you have bought the exhaust kit for your truck.
