hey man i have both....i would reccomend you get a programmer first there is a huge power difference and it will get you better gas mileage then get you your cold air intake ...you will feel the power gain from the programmer...and you wont tell that much of a difference with the intake

Well, performance mods are usually a package deal ....to get the most out of a performance intake, you need to also upgrade the exhaust side. If you're doing this in phases, then do something like a real cold air intake with a cat back system. Then, when the wallet allows, go for the intake and a set of high flow cats or maybe a set of shorty headers. If you improve one side of the motor (intake) you have to also upgrade the other (exhaust) to get the most from your performance upgrade dollars.

A tuner can probably make some improvements to the stock engine and certainly work some magic on the tranny (shift points, shift quality, converter lock up, etc) ...so you might do best starting with the tuner ...and as you make improvements down the road you'll be able to re-tune the engine to fully exploit these improvements.
I'm not so much a smart guy as a guy smart enough to know how to find out....

I would do a programmer then cut off your factory muffler and get a aftermark one that sounds good to you. You could just drop in a K&n filter in your factory air box or just make your own intake.

A programer will probably be the best bang for the buck (and like 98 gmc 4x4 said, add a muffler and a K&N panel filter to hold you over on the cheap). Like said above it does more than just let in/out more air and if you get one like Diablo's Trinity or the soon to be out dated Predator you can get a custom tune after you find the cash for the intake and exhaust you want tieing it all together.

Intake or programmer

Start with an Airaid Jr intake tube and K&N drop in filter. Then do something with the exhaust. Then programmer last.

I've got a Hypertech on my 03. It worked wonders for me... I don't think you'll get burned, as long as you stay with the major brands (EDGE, Diablo, Hypertech, Superchips, etc.).
