K and N filter test

Postby 95LT1Z28 [OP] » Jan 28 2011, 8:39pm

Hey guys, I finally got around to picking up my K and N filter, but before I put it in I wanted to do some "testing" on how much the filter improved performance and gas mileage if at all.

WITH STOCK FILTER
I did my first test running highway only on my way to work for about 35 miles. It was 22 degrees out and on the way to work I managed to get 18.2 mpg driving my normal speeds between 65-70 mph. On my way home from work same amount of miles but a few more down hill areas I managed to get 20.1 going the same speed and roughly the same temperature, 23 degrees. I also did an "in town" test driving about 2 miles through your average stop and go traffic in a small town. I managed to achieve 16.6mpg. My average overall mpg (counting me "seeing what it had" when I first got it and getting into the pedal a bit more) was 15.5.

WITH K and N FILTER

After I installed the K and N filter I did another highway test going the same distance as mentioned in the paragraph above this. Going to work the mpg jumped up to 20.2 at 23 degrees and coming home (with the downhill areas) it went up to 22.7 mpg at 21 degrees. My in town mpg jumped up to 17.8 going 2 miles through town , the same as the first test. Now my average from doing all of my daily driving, highway, town, and beating on her a little is 17.4. I am impressed with the gain in gas mileage across the board and for $50 bucks, I think it could save you a few hundred bucks worth of fuel in the long run along with proper vehcile maintence and responsible driving.

Nice work!! More proof that changing air filters to a less restrictive design has some real benefits...

Less restrictive = more dirt passing through.

I didn't do any testing but I did see milage increases with and Airaid system. Would be interesting to see if the numbers are similar to K&N.

Is this with just the filter, or the entire intake system?

Agree. And the opportunity for your MAF to get covered in filter oil.

...and the debate rages on....

Never had problems with filter oil on the MAF. Perhaps that's related to driving style and not over-oiling the filter.

I was wondering if the filter would give you that knid of gains and for the 50 buck you can't beat it.

This was with just a K and N filter alone, not an intake system. And I have had a K and N on every vehicle I owned minus my camaro (have slp intake and blackwing filters) without any issues at all. People that have problems with the maf sensor getting oily should stick to using a dry filter because they dont know how to oil the filter properly. Ive only ever heard of people having MAF and oil issues after they tried to service their filter themselves, not when they first put it in. I do agree that it is a less restrictive filter, but I still havent found any evidence off it being so unrestrictive that it hinders the vehicles engine performance? Maybe someone else can chime in on this that has witnessed engine problems (internal) because of a less restrictive design

If I did the math right, if you are averaging 2 MPG better, then over the course of a year the filter could pay for itself 4x in savings at the pump.
