Lifter Noise?

Lifter Noise?

Postby I RocDuP I [OP] » Apr 30 2012, 3:21am

Whats up everyone, finally decided to make an account after reading the site for months. I have a 2011 Silverado Ext. Cab 5.3 3.42 6 Speed which I got back in December. Ever since I brought the truck home it always made this loud ticking noise particularly during cold engine starts. For example the first time I start the truck up in the morning there is a semi loud ticking noise at 1200 rpms. It will tick for about 10 to 15 seconds or until RPMS drop. It also does it if the truck has been off for several hours during the day. I believe its the lifters, just what I heard from reading on the forum. The truck has also been back twice for a steering rack and oil pan and its got only 5600 miles on it. Anyone else have this ticking noise?

Sounds like piston slap to me. Nothing to worry about. It has been discussed on here a number of times I am sure.

I thought that but the only thing that makes me think lifter is because if I'm driving with the windows open I can hear it ticking when transitioning from
V4 to V8 when doing about 40mph

In these newer trucks I don't think it's piston slap. I had ticking noise at startup and had the oil pump replace because of an out of spec issue. I believe it caused oil aeration. Tick is gone after pump replacement.

It's the lifters. My '08 did it, the solution for me was to replace a quart of oil with a quart of Rislone oil treatment at every oil change... stopped completely.

Correct, some AFM lifers are defective and they released a new lifter in 2010 and the TSB says to replace all lifters if even one fails the test.

Yes, if you have the TSB that would be great. Ill bring it to the dealer sometime in the summer when I dont need the truck. Will there be any consequence to letting them tick away.
