LOCKED UP ENGINE !!! 5.3 locked up Sitting Still !!

Postby jerrodlk [OP] » Dec 05 2012, 1:38am

Guys,
I have a 2002 5.3 auto 4x4 that locked up just sitting there. It was my grandfather's truck and nobody drove it for a year and a half. Went to start it the other day and it is locked up....Kind of

The crank will turn over normally for 90 degrees of rotation then hits a hard stop in both directions. I have filled the cylinders with PB Blaster for 3 weeks. I even drained the oila nd poured 6 gallons of diesel fuel right in the the oil fill and left it for 3 weeks to soak. Still will not turn over. I took the starter off too just for good messure.

I don't get it. Why would it rotate 90 degrees??? I need somebody's thoughs on this one.

Thanks,

Nope. I pulled the plugs. Same thing, just easier to turn.

I can't believe a piston is stuck cause the crank rotates 90 degrees. Mabye a lifter or valve. Your thoughts?

If a piston was stuck it wouldn't turn at all. Maybe its a bent valve

I would pull the valve covers and have a look. Bent valves, broken timing chain, could be a couple different things.

ALWAYS remove belt and try to start if you suspect motor locked up. a/c compressors and water pumps can cause this (more common than you think) but if not i would pull valve covers and inspect rocker arms, springs, push rods, etc, if ok, remove rocker arms and look at valve heights and see if any are lower. they should all be same height with rocker arms removed. that leaves bottom end and timing set left. i'd pull it and dissasemble just to know if your gonna swap it out. good luck.
