Low oil add oil warning message

Postby slbe1892 [OP] » Nov 21 2011, 2:49pm

So the other night when I pull in the driveway my truck dings and says " low oil add oil." So first thing in the morning I go to get a change (I knew it was about 1000 overdue.) When they check it it doesn't even register on the dip stick. And this truck has never dripped or smoked. So what's the deal? The last oil change was at the dealer BEFORE I bought it.

Monitor it a little closer this time around. My truck goes thru a quart in 5k. No idea where it goes, but every oil change it is about a quart low. Might just be that they underfilled it, hopefully. Could be a slow leak that isn't leaving spots. Look for oil residue under the motor and that may be the issue.

when i replaced my intake gaskets there was a bout two cups worth of oil inside the intake plenum. never had any blue smoke tho. i think these trucks sneakingly burn oil.

Is it a 2007 new body style with active fuel management engine?

There have been oil consumption problems with the early AFM engines.

The oil boils off

Volatization is a term used to describe what happens to a fluid when it is heated to the point it begins to "boil off." Upon reaching a certain temperature, oil will begin to lose some of its lighter weight molecules as they vaporize and leave heavier weight molecules behind. Not only does this cause higher oil consumption, it causes increased viscosity, making the oil more difficult to circulate through the lubrication system. The thicker oil left behind after volatization contributes to damaging deposits, sticky piston rings and oil blow-by, all of which contribute to reduced engine life, reduced fuel economy and increased air pollution.

At one time it was not uncommon for typical conventional oils to experience 20-30 percent boil-off in the NOACK Volatility Test. Today’s API standard for SM and SN oils is 15 percent, putting greater demands on oil manufacturers. Premium synthetic oils are significantly more resistant to these effects, with some of the best in the 4.5 to 6 percent range.
