misfires and rough idle

Postby jdweavey [OP] » Apr 22 2011, 2:35am

I just purchased this truck and need some info. I see this is a very common problem, have had truck two weeks and has been in garage three times. Has new plugs, wires and the last thing was intake gaskets( last thursday). Ran great until yesterday, now runs worse then it did before new gaskets were installed. SES light comes and goes, but was blinking for about ten seconds today and went off completely, when engine is warm truck seems to run great. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

check the 02 sensors. when running rich or lean, it trails back to the misfire. found that out after replacing everything. my sensors were black. it shouldn't be dirty. or vacuum leak somewhere. make sure the plugs arent cracked from mis handling or overtightening

misfires and rough idle

If it's a 98' or older I'm 100% sure it's the distributor cap.

Did you get a load of some poor fuel? The reason I ask is GM engines do not like any gum in the fuel and that can cause valves to stick. A compression check can verify a problem cylinder. Also a fluctuating vacuum reading shows the same thing

I got the fuel from the Citgo gas station that I always fill up at, never have had problems with it before. Light was off yesterday, back on again this morning and was lacking on power.

Ok, think I found the problem the guy that had the truck before me helped me out and did a tune up, and put all new junk parts on( plugs and wires). I put a new set of wires and ac delco perf. iradium plugs in and the truck now seems to be running great, now my question is, my ses light is still on do I have to clear that myself or is there still more to fix?

misfires and rough idle

Postby Jrluz14 » May 05 2011, 12:04pm

Sometimes it takes about 100 miles before it shuts off and resets itself.

Yes, it should go off by itself. If you did not discu=onnect the battery while doing the work, you may want to do that, to reset the ECM.

It will not hurt, and probably will help.
Disconnect the negative cable. Step on the brakes (drains any remaining power out of the system). Re-connect and go.
