Better Air In, Better Air Out = More Power...

I honestly dont know how well a standard bolt on 5.3L will stack up even to a stock 6.2L on a straight up pull...

I know going off crank numbers, your about 85 Crank HP less. Then theres the question of what the drivetrain percentage loss is for these trucks ? Im gonna go with 20% loss as a round figure estimate for WHP numbers...

5.3L - 315 Crank HP / 335 Crank TQ x 20% DT Loss = 252 Wheel HP / 268 Wheel TQ

6.2L - 403 Crank HP / 417 Crank TQ x 20% DT Loss = 323 Wheel HP / 334 Wheel TQ

Stock your already down 70 WHP / 65 WTQ...

If you really wanted to beef up your truck enough to evenly stack up, I would say these would get you close maybe...

Intake, Exhaust, Headers, 93 Oct Tune, Ignition...

Im sure there are other things to add, or substitute but your talking a decent chunk of change...

It's funny, my 99 Silverado 5.3 used to smoke the SS and the Sierra with the 6.0.
With a tune, billet pulley's home made intake, dual exhaust and Corvette Servo in the transmission I could walk past them all day long.
Now that the truck has over 300,000 on her we don't push her like that any more.
Buying things I don't need to impress people I don't know.

Need to beef up my engine

First things first, ditch the superchip and sell it, then get a custom tune. Exhaust and intake as well has long tube headers. That STILL won't get you to beat him, but you'll be much closer. If you have the guts to do it, pull the heads and cam the truck as well as a higher stall converter, then you'll be passing him will spinning a little tire.

^ Probably the best option, especially with the HP numbers you have to get, just to stay close to your uncle. However, your engine will be happier if you redo the intake and exhaust, as well as get a custom tune.

80 HP is a lot to wring out of an engine; not impossible, but it takes a lot of $$$$. Plus, if you start making tons of HP from your 5.3, you'll have to beef up the transmission, too.

Probably useless to supercharge an engine without doing all that first. Plus, a supercharger costs significantly more than all that I listed.

^^You're right, he's looking at thousands of $$$$... you think he'd be better off doing an engine swap?

Yeah I have all the prices in my head since I'm going that route myself lol. But yes, an engine swap would be his best bet. No bolt ons will get you past a 6.2, you're better off getting at least a 6.0 Vmax if not a 6.2.

Re: Need to beef up my engine

I've got a 6.2 in my Camaro and there is no comparison. The 5.3 has no torque compared to the 6.2. I just got my 2011 Sierra a two weeks ago and I'm really disappointed with the 5.3 for mountain driving. Actually might sell it and get a different truck.

Save your money, you won't catch up to 6.2 with a 5.3?
