New to site, 2010 5.3 "engine knock/piston slap"

Postby ReevesMD [OP] » Oct 08 2011, 3:43pm

Would greatly appreciate advice as to this notorious noise that occurs on start up. Beit a "knock" "lifters" or "piston slap," are there if any, fixes to this obnoxious sound? I've read posts from "oil filter return valves" to "this oil is the fix." Your help is MUCH appreciated and look forward to the benfits of this forum as well as the professional input!
-Thanks again, Mark

Well, some Amsoil won't hurt ya, but it's TBD if it will help. Fom what I have heard, piston slap is annoying, but not detrimental to the engine.

how long does it knock for at start up? If it knocks for a least 5 minutes or untill engine warms up take it back to dealer and tell them you want a new engine.I have a 2011 6.2 ltz with 12000 on the speedo and my truck is in the shop getting a brand new crate engine transplant.GM tried to tell me it was normal which in turn I told them they were crazy. They said they would replace cam and lifters but they pulled a head and guess what? #8 cylinder wall was scored so they said yup time for a new engine,GM will tell you anything so they dont have to fix it but stick to your guns and they will come trough

GM trucks also seem to have annoying fuel injectors that sound like a bad lifter. I've heard a lot of 6.2s going under the knife for cam and lifter replacements. I just turned 3000 miles and all is well.

Wouldn't ya know it....it got really cold here this past week, and I heard it on my truck for the first time. Not loud, and did not last long, but it was there. Damn, I though I dodged a bullet. Oh well, now I just have to believe everyone (and my own previous advice) that it will not hurt anything.....

I had a trailblazer ext with the 5.3 that did it, I couldnt stand it. It was very loud for about 30 seconds after start up when cold or hadnt been started for a few hours, it drove me crazy so I traded it in. I am currently praying my silverado doesnt do it to me as well

I had the same noise on my 05, but it got worse as it the motor got hot. Took me several months of taking it to dealer several times for them to finally say "that's not normal" and they tore it down to find a scored cylinder. They replaced it with a GM reman new motor. I put 11,000 on it before trading for my 12.

In either of the above posts that mentioned cylinder scoring and engine repalcement, was it ever determined what lead to the scoring in the first place? I'm wondering if the AFM played a part.

Tech couldn't pin point a cause. Although it was NOT an AFM engine so that wasn't it.

I'm not sure I follow your meaning here. The tech couldn't pin point a cause but knows it was not AFM related? Do you know if the cylinder in question was one of the AFM holes?
