Noise under the hood

Noise under the hood

Postby Scooter06 [OP] » Jan 17 2012, 5:31pm

Since its gotten colder I've noticed a squeaking noise coming from the front of the engine compartment, usually only after cold starts. The first time I heard it, it went away after about ten mins of driving normally in town. Its been about 2 weeks now, and today it didn't go away after 45 mins on the highway. I'm starting to get concerned and decided to ask for some input

About said noise- Repetitive squeaking that increases with throttle, sounds like a belt squeak but different. Almost goes completely away at idle. To my somewhat-trained ear, it sounds like its coming from a pulley on the top of the engine. The idler pulley is new (replaced in September), as are both belts.

Any advice or reassurance is greatly appreacited!

It may be an idler pully or the tention pulley.

I have a 07 and also replaced the the idler pulley and belts. When i did that the main squeak went away but then i had the cold start chirp as well and it would go away after i drove it awhile. I believe it is the ac belt tensioner and belt. I sprayed water on that smaller belt/tensioner and it went away. I thinbk my alternator chirps a bit too :(

Think I get her all figured out. Took the upper tensioner pulley off and gave it a good cleaning, then squirted some grease in between the pulley and bearing. Put it all back together and fired her up in the driveway- no noise and or chirps! Hopefully it all passes the road test..

Just went for a quick spin around town with various amounts of "foot". Final verdict: I think the tensioner pulley bearing is bad. My greasework seems to have slowed the chirp, but has not stopped it. There's no chirp up to about 1000rpm, but above that it increases with throttle still, albeit quieter than before. I'm going to replace the pulley tomorrow and see what happens. Keep your fingers crossed for me boys & girls...
