p0300, p0171,p0174

Postby yoke [OP] » Feb 14 2012, 6:42pm

I keep getting p0300 and sometimes 0171 & 0174. I drive around with the scan tool connected. On cold mornings engine usually revs up then drops, then once I start driving I get the 0300. If the weather warms up the code usually clears itself.

My truck has 155k miles, the guy I bought it from really didnt do any maintenance so I started replacing maint items hoping to fix the problem. 2 new front o2 sensors, spark plugs, ignition wires, PCV, fuel filter. I cleaned MAF and throttle body. Ive run bg44k and seafoam thru gas tank, and tried filling up with Shells highest octane gas. So then I checked fuel pressure (when temp was warm in the 30s)and got 53psi pump on not running and 48 psi when running. So I checked it when colder (in morning in the 20s) and got 49psi not running, 48psi running. I found out the fuel pump was replaced at 100k and I checked the fuel regulator. Thinking fuel supply is good I moved on. Next, I sprayed starter fluid all around intake manifold when it was warm and in the morning when cold, found nothing. Next, I put a vacuum guage on (connected at brake booster). Guage stayed steady, so I dont think I have a leak. (even though I think symptoms would suggest I do.) I checked that I have spark from coil packs to ignition wires and wires to plugs.
Now, I have guesses to what the problem could be.Like a bad injector or a coil pack going bad but these are just that, guesses. I could definately use some help here.thanks

Sometimes the crankshaft position looses it calibration. There is a simple learn procedure with a scan tool that might help. I find the most of the trucks i see with a p0300 it fixes. Now that you have a p0171 and p0174 you may have two problems. I the intake manifold gaskets have been updated dues to problems. The old started fluid trick may not work. To really see that work use the scan tool and look short tirm fuel trim and spray around the intake if it increases you know there is a problem.

I found the learn procedure on alldata. I have a code reader (actron cp9135). I dont believe it has a crankshaft position (CKP) variation learn procedure. And it also will not record short term fuel trim. Looks like it may be time to upgrade. Any suggestions on which one I should purchase?
Also I didnt really emphasize that the P0300 code comes on in the cold and goes away by itself (I do not have to clear it) when the temperature warms up (upper 30'F or 40'F).
thanks for your help

maybe this can help

p0300 can be caused by :
Faulty spark plugs or wires
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector(s)
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
Faulty camshaft position sensor
Defective computer

the options in italic i'm pretty sure its not the problem, because from experience that would cause other other codes related to it to go on..

P0171and p0174 code can be caused by :
The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.

did you try maybe changing the maf?? i know you cleaned it,but sometimes changing is better

No, I dont want to just throw $100 at the problem, because there are too many things it could be.Is there a way to actually test it? thanks
