P0449 Code, 2008 GMC Sierra 5.3

Can I fix the P0449 myself?

P0449 Code, 2008 GMC Sierra 5.3

Postby nyamwegi [OP] » Oct 26 2011, 12:10pm

Hi Everyone,

I've had my Sierra (Peggy) a few months now and love it. Of course I get a check engine light to come on a few thousand miles past the bumper to bumper warranty expires.

Auto Zone is saying a P0449 is an evaporative emission system error - particularly electrical. I've researched online and found this is a somewhat common issue on our trucks.

I'm mainly wanting to know if there's a reasonable way to go about diagnosing / fixing this. I love to work on cars and have undertaken some significant fixes but I do have a full time job and spare time is in short supply for me. The last thing I want to do is start guessing which parts are bad and slowly fixing it.

If need be I will go to a shop / dealership but I've read something about it being upwards of 1k for this fix? Seems a tad high but I'd like to get input if I could.

THanks in Advance

P0449 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit Malfunction

This is commonly caused by something as simple as not having your gas cap on completely. If this is the case and your gas cap is seating properly, the code should go away by itself or worse case send a code reset to the computer with an OBDII device. Owning one isn't a bad idea, they're cheap these days. ;)

had this issue with my car years ago.. thought it was the gas cap, but it wasn't... took it to the dealer and it ended up being the valve on the evap canister was stuck open, so they had to replace the valve.... cheap/quick fix and haven't had any issue with it since then...

HELP! I've ordered the replacement Evaporative Emission Purge Solenoid Valve from Advance Auto. Part #s are matching what they're showing #214-1680, GM# 12597567

Here's the problem: What I'm seeing under the truck looks nothing like the part I got. I'm pretty sure what I'm looking at in front of the gas tank is indeed the solenoid though:

Here's the part I got in the mail from Advance Auto:

Well I figured out that those are two completely different parts, for those of you that were thinking I'm an idiot.

I went ahead and replaced the one that I got from advance auto. This is located right on top of the engine near the intake. Hoping it's fixed the problem I'm gonna have a shop clear the code. It's description is "Evaporative Emission Canister Purge"

My question is, what's the difference in these two parts?

I'm confused.....

Hello. The smaller part seems to be the purge solenoid under the hood and the other canister one is the evap solenoid. I am in the same predicament right now with my 07 impala. I had this fixed on my 07 silverado under warranty. Did replacing the purge solenoid under the hood clear your code? im wondering because i bought the evap canister and it is on its way. Thanks for any input!

With the P0449 code, my only question is how to tell whether the problem is the purge valve canister under the hood or the vent valve solenoid near the gas tank? I dont want to replace the wrong one and then stuck buying the other one too and replacing both.

I replaced the canister one first and it didnt work and that was the more expensive part :( Then i put the new purge solenoid in and it was fixed. I got the purge solenoid from amazon.com for only 15 bucs and its ac delco!!!! (this was for a 07 impala though, but the part is almost exact as my 07 silverado...I would replace purge solenoid first under the hood..it took me 5 minutes. If it is the canister oh well, never hurts to have a spare part around.

Also on my impala forum several people fixed that canister valve by simply unplugging the larger hose and spraying silicon lube on the valve so it would no longer stay in the stuck position..what happens is this shitty ethanol fuel blend dries out the valves...dang treehuggers and this ethanol crap :(

So I replaced the purge valve under the hood and that did not solve the problem so I'm going to replace the vent solenoid. My question is if there is a limit to the distance away from the solenoid that you place the vent itself? Can I run a long 5/8" hose up to the engine compartment so it doesn't get dust on it or should I keep it above the transmission like where the stock one is currently?
