Popped a P0174 and P0171 Code

Popped a P0174 and P0171 Code

Postby Portmanblaze91 [OP] » Feb 13 2011, 2:09am

Well gents, I did a quick search for this and found nothing so here it goes. I finally got around to changing out my bad fuel pressure regulator wich was causing intermitant rough starts and bleed fuel when I popped off the vaccum line.

Wouldn't you know that after driving it for about 20 miles the check engine light comes on after a restart. I gased up on that trip and was hoping I just forgot to put the cap back on! Not the case. I pulled codes and came up with:
P0171 System too lean Bank 1
P0174 System too lean Bank 2

Now I did a little customizing to the air intake after the MAP sensor a few months agao, so I'll make that right.

Guy at the parts store said it may be an O2 sensor but it didn't list which one.

Anyone have any other sugestions?

Apparently I didn't search good enough b/c I found a post suggesting these codes in relation to replacing the intake.

Now my queustion is, why did the codes pop after I replaced the pressure regulator????

Truck runs fine.

Q: What components besides the regulator could cause a lean condition in the cylinder banks? How old are the vacuum lines? If they have 140k miles, I replace them all. In fact, at a 140k and as old as your truck is, I'd (just my preference) replace and upgrade the pump, regulator, vacuum lines, O2 sensor, and any original ignition components from the coil to plugs.

Man, I wish I had that kind of cash flow to throw at it. Unfortunantly, I'm on a bit of a tight budget. I think I'll be yanking the O2 sensors, but somehting is telling me that's not the issue. If it where an O2 sensor, I would think I would of popped codes much sooner and doesn't make sence that both banks are showing hte same thing which tells me it must be a common problem. I'm mostly leaning towards an intake issue.

One missing piece to the puzzle was that I bought the truck with the engine light on b/c of a seized vent valve on the charcoal canister. After I replaced that the engine light went away and it ran fine except every once in a while it would have a hard start then spudder up to idle and run smooth after that. After looking at posts on here, I decided to change the regulator which made the truck run much smotther and hasn't had the hard starts. Now, the light is back and I think I have it runnign too good now! :?

The other thing it could be, and this is just a SWAG, is the 10% ethanol gas. Ever since gasoline has been diluted with this ethanol crap, I've had an intermittent check engine lights as well. I've learned to ignore it. It comes on less when I run 93 octane from Top Tier distributors.

Now that's interesting. I'll burn this tank down and run some 93 through it. I did get a half tank from a station I normally don't get gass from and the light did come on about twenty minutes after a I fueld up from empty.

Great sugestion!!!! Too many factors in this issue to hammer one out!

Well, I attempted a modification that went wrong. I removed one of the collectors from teh bottom of the intake tub and the seal I used failed. This time I used a rubber pipe cap that fit exactly in the hole and sealed around it with RTV.

Actually, the engine light came on yet again today. Back to the drawing board. I got to enjoy a few days with out the light on!
