Secondary air injection malfunction

Postby Njss [OP] » Jun 04 2011, 8:30am

Hi thanks for the great forum. I have a 2000 Sierra 1500 5.3 V8 4wd. I recently had check engine light come on for code P0410 Secondary Air Injection Malfunction

I checked the pump for power working, pulled a check valve off appeared dark and corroded stuck shut. I replaced both valves on each side of engine, had check engine light cleared, and am now waiting and hopping that was the issue. :? Any other ideas would be great in case that was not the issue.
Here are the possible codes
P0410 Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
P0411 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected
P0412 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Malfunction
P0413 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open
P0414 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Shorted
P0415 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve B Circuit Malfunction
P0416 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve B Circuit Open
P0417 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve B Circuit Shorted
P0418 Secondary Air Injection System Relay "A" Circuit Malfunction
P0419 Secondary Air Injection System Relay "B" Circuit Malfunction

My only experience with the secondary air pump was on a 2001 S-10 Blazer with the V6. The check engine light came on, and indicated P0410. We replaced the secondary air pump. About 20K later, the P0410 was back. Took the replacement pump off, and found it was filled with water. Don't know how. This happened 2 more times between 15-20k miles before I sold it. Never knew for sure where the water was coming from.

I read the water comes from the exaust. It gets in the pump because the check valves are staying open all the time. I will add pictures tonight.
