So you want a tuner

Postby JCunningham [OP] » Jan 31 2012, 4:55am

I dont know all the answers to this but i think there should be a sticky on it.
Here is what i do know.
Tuners do work
Tuners can void your warrenty if you do not return them back to stock.
You do not want a chip. You need a tuner that retunes your ECM and TCM
Now iv heard that befor 2012 the trucks do not record the last time they were programed. On a 2012 truck GM can tell when your computers were last programed and if they did not do it will void your warrenty. Is this True?
we paid a lot of money for a trucks and a tuner is not worht losing your warrenty over.
I have a SCT tuner and its great.
I turned off the useless 4cyl mode have more power better shifting and same milage.

Well, I don't know if it is stickie-worthy, but it is good knowledge. Didn't know that about the 2012 Chevy, but I had my 'tuner' days and to tell you the truth, I don't know that the tuner made all that much difference past all the added/changed engine parts. Nevertheless, GM probably is looking for some way to justify voiding the warranty so if you are this guy that HAS to tune...you also have to pay the price.

in terms of the legality of voiding a warranty, I don't see how they could void it no matter when the comp was reset as long as it is set to GM settings. Think about it, how many small shops have the capability of doing it, they have no way of knowing to what purpose it was reset. I have been wrong before tho

Just don't throw your Diablo, Hypertech, Bullydog or SCT stickers on the back window and you should be fine.

Only GM can reprogram your computer. Your local mechanic can not. Other shops can read and clear codes. Gm keeps track of everything they do to your truck. So it your truck was reprogrammed and GM has no record of doing it it will void your warranty. Now the fuzzy part is when did GM start time stamping there programs.

The info about "tuners" and if they can be caught by a dealer is all over the place. According to the above link 2010s can be "found out" if they are altered. In addition, supposedly Diablo tuners cannot be traced by the dealers according to some. While I would without a doubt want to "firm up" the sloppy transmission of my 2011 -there is no way I would take even the SLIGHTEST chance of voiding the powertrain warranty. So-I have never seen ANYTHING IN WRITING from the different tuners talked about on this board in regards to leaving a trace on the OEM ECM, so I will just have to wait. UNLESS THEY WANT TO COME FORWARD!
