timing chain or timing belt

timing chain or timing belt

Postby amadesian [OP] » May 13 2011, 1:45am

Hi all,

I apologize if this question has been asked before.

I have a 2000 Silverado 5.3 liter v8. I have 2 questions. Does the engine have a timing belt or timing chain? I believe it has a timing chain. Question 2 is should the timing chain be replaced as a matter of maintenance, and if so, at what mileage?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not a GM engine trivia guy but I don't recall GM aver making a V8 engine with a timing belt.

Thanks for the reply. With that, I will go with timing chain. Does it need to be replaced as a matter of maintenance, and if so, at what mileage? I am thinking it does not need to be replaced(?)

Wait till the certified techs answer that one. But unless you're drag racing avery day or have super high mileage, I'm pretty sure those timing chains are bullet proof.

Timing chains do not need to be replaced, unless rebuilding the engine.............

Timing chain and it should be good for the life of the engine. How many miles do you have now? Usually the fuel pump will go before the chain. Engines have longer chain life now because you have roller lifters and better oil.

I just turned 100,000 miles. I have had the fuel pump and fuel sending unit replaced.

Really? Wow. Does this vehicle see a lot of idle time? Or poor fuel?

It is a daily driver, but I live about 8 miles from work and don't drive it much on the weekends.

I have been to Sturgis twice from Raleigh.
