Top Speed of Silverado on Performance Chip

Postby bgperry.usmc [OP] » Nov 25 2011, 9:00am

Hello, I have a 2011 Z71 Silverado with the 5.3l V8. I am interested in putting in a performance chip, and i wanted to know if any of you know the max achievable speed of the truck with a chip in it? I know that it's not a speed-demon of a truck, but if anyone had some first hand knowledge of top speed using a chip, i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Who the heck would ever want to go that fast in a truck? These are not performance vehicles. One bad move at that speed, and your very last memory is you and your truck....

Eric does have a point. It's not like these things are designed for high-speed travel. In fact, they're one of the worst choices for taking out on a high-speed run: the high center of gravity, lots of wind resistance makes them susceptible to cross-winds, the heavy weight would make braking an adventure in itself, and even the tires would pose a risk, since they're not designed for just about anything above 90 MPH. But, with most programmers, you can raise the speed limiter to whatever you want (my Hypertech allows for 255+ MPH for some reason). You can probably look up the top speed data on a major car and truck magazine website's test section (Motor Trend, Car and Driver, etc.). I know they've got it all listed for performance cars, but who knows about trucks.

I have had my 02 to the stock limiter a few times. There is considerable lift with these trucks and anything less than perfect conditions is downright dangerous. They get very squirrelly at high speeds and poor conditions compounds the problem.

That's a good point about the tires. I know that sports cars tires are rated, but are truck tires? Hate to have one come apart at 100+(let alone ~55).

Top Speed of Silverado on Performance Chip

Postby fox4wd1981 » Nov 28 2011, 4:49am

I have had a Hypertech on several trucks. Most for raw power, and one specifically for fast racing. It was a 2001 Sierra single cab and I got it up to 158 once. Mostly it was a strip truck and I never focused on the mph, only the 1/4 mile time. My current truck 2008 crew cab with 5.3 has a Hypertech and I have gotten it up to 126

Top Speed of Silverado on Performance Chip

Postby Jrluz14 » Nov 28 2011, 5:12am

I hope you guys that are going that far over 100mph understand that these driveshafts act like jump ropes at those speeds and it VERY common for them to break. Unless you have a high speed balanced shaft, don't go over 100mph. I have heard plenty of stories about this happening on the highways and on dynos as well. It's a nightmare when they break and it's not uncommon for the driveshaft to break and go right through the fuel tank as well.

I have gone 102 in my truck. I was supprised by how well it handled the speed. I wouldn't take it much higher, unless I was on the track (my truck can't even make it to 100 in the 1/4 haha). My DiabloSport Predator has an option to turn the govenor completely off, so that's what I did. Never know when you will need to run from the cops going 150mph. haha
