Need advice before I take it to the dealership.

Unknown noise

Postby josh36530 [OP] » Dec 20 2011, 1:31am

Ok so I have a 2011 Silverado 5.3 V8 2WD. 17k Miles. Running reg gas and fully synthetic RP oil. havent changed any other fluids. I have a K&N CAI with the plastic tube. Now on to my question. Just recently I have been hearing a squealing, squeaking, rattling high pitched sound only when I accelerate. Now I know what some of you are thinking , its the CAI when I get into it, no I know what you are talking about and it is not that. I have heard that and this is slightly diffrent. The best thing I can compare it to is when you hear a belt slipping in an old ragged car when they first start it up. However! Mine is not that loud and I cannot hear it when I am at idle. Only when I get passed 2nd gear and I am accelerating. Hunting season just started and I have not had a chance to wash my truck so it is a little dirty under the hood. I havent been doing any mud riding I do have to travel down a few dirt roads and it has been a little wet recently. Please give me some input and Thanks in advance.

Scary Noise!

Postby josh36530 [OP] » Jan 14 2012, 12:32pm

I posted about this a couple of weeks ago and have some new info. I have been hearing a slight high pitched sound from the drivers side of my 2011 Silverado, only when I accelerate and it gets louder the faster I get. I took it to the dealership before my Christmas trip and he could not hear anything. No check engine light or anything. My dad mentioned that it could be an exhaust leak which makes sense but I have never heard one before so I am not sure. Heres the new noise......I got into the gas last week (racing a dodge) and when I got to about 3rd gear and let off I heard a LOUD noise of high pitchyness and the sound of rushing air. I can best compare it to if my truck had turbo or nitros and off the movie fast and furious when the rev their engines, the sound when the air releases.Yes I am a little ADD. ANYWAYS! Still no codes or other problems. I have a K&N CAI and everything seems to be in tact with that. It is very very low volume and cannot hear anything when it is idle or I am coasting. Also, I do not know if it is related but when I first crank my truck it starts then seems like it loses power and then goes to idle, the truck never shuts off it just sounds like it is going to. Thanks for the help. If the dealership cant do anything then who can?

Sounds like your truck is telling you to back off, it wasn't designed to be a race truck. Seriously though, hard to tell, is there anyway you can make a video of it and post it? If the dealer can't figure it out I doubt someone on the net would be able to without seeing it, somehow.

If you have another thread already it would probably be better to continue it instead of starting a new one. That way everyone knows what has already been disscused and or ruled out.

Is it possible the issue is with your CAI? Have you checked every connection to ensure there is no air leakage? If you still have it, it may be worth going back to the stock air box for a while, to see if still does it. If nothing else, it helps you narrow down the issue.

Also take a look at your vaccum lines. Had the exact same problem in an old jeep and it drove me nuts until one day while getting on the highway it got real loud and made it easy to find. Hose that went to the brake booster had small slit in it so it was hard to hear unless under load.
