What mpg can I expect?

What mpg can I expect?

Postby Ga-Silverado [OP] » Apr 22 2011, 5:54pm

I will be looking at used Silverado's soon..I need to get the best mpg's possible..I need/want 5.3l--or should I lean towards 4.8-- extended cab for kids and short bed cab..
would love to get z71 4wd but don't really need it, so I will probably get 2wd..What kind of mpg would I be looking at with those specs?? I will be looking at 04 and up..What rearend gearing should I look for as well..Won't be doing any heavy towing... I have been without a truck for awhile now and need any bit of advice yall can give..Thanks-

With under 3,000 miles on my 2010 5.3 I am getting around 15 mpg on average. That is mostly city driving, I would love to get it on the highway and see what it can do but I cant afford to do so for research reasons alone.lol Maybe I can run the wife and boy down to Sea World in Orlando and see how she does on the way down, by the way, might stop at Daytona HD and pick my 14th HD shirt (might have more and just lost count). Just picked up my Okinawa, Japah, HD shirt a few weeks ago.

My 01 ext cab z71 with 101k miles gets about 18, that's city commuting. Highway cruising a little better.

First advice: You'll be surprised at how often you'll need 4x4; rear-drive 2wd trucks are more helpless than a Prius when it comes to snow, mud, etc. Sure, you're in Georgia, but it's impossible to anticipate all the different scenarios that will arise, once you get a truck.

As far as the 4.8L vs. 5.3L, or what gearing you should get, hopefully some more knowledgeable guys than me can help you.

What Star said also better resale value.
The 2wd will more than likely net you better mileage though.
Probably not too much difference between 4.8 & 5.3 mileage.
Maybe someone with the combo you are looking at will chime in.

I just got done on a road trip from lake tahoe ca to palm springs ,then to Newport ca, and then back to tahoe.lots of hiway above 70 mph and had a chance to fill up a couple of tanks of e85.Had a high of 16.8 to a low of 14.8,i am happy with that for a CC 4#4.I have the 5.3l.noticed anything above 70 mph would not go into v-4 mode i think just due to wind resistance.
For those of you who have not tried the e85 try it!
I paid 3.52 a gallon in sacramento ca.Truck runs well on it with just a slight decrease in fuel mileage
