2500 HD Gas Mileage

Postby dascst275 [OP] » May 17 2011, 2:32am

I just bought a 2011 2500 HD with the 6.0L V8. I was trying to choose between the gas and the diesel engine and was talked out of the deisel because it is more expensive to operate and maintain. I have just under 800 miles on it still and am only getting about 13MPG out of it. I was wondering what you diesel guys are getting out of yours and if you have done any mods to it. Also do you guys do more highway driving or city driving and what is the mileage you guys are getting when towing? All of you 6.0 guys please chime in also.

My opinion is you buy as much truck as you need. Who talked you out of the Diesel?

I have a friend that has a F350 that he doesn't like. Most likely because he has had to replace the injectors in it several times. The other person is a diesel mechanic for a local freight company on their semi's both local and over the road. They both told me that it will not be worth it to me unless I am going to work the turck and all of the city driving that I would be doing will put too much wear on the motor as compared to highway driving.

Diesel has lots of torque but financially right now it doesn't make any sense unless you really need to haul or pull a huge load all the time. Diesel costs ~20% more than gasoline. If you factor in the cost of the diesel engine up front and paying more for fuel, gasoline trucks win...unless they're unable to do what you need from a physical perspective.

Iam getting a little over 13. Well thats what the truck says. I noticed that it inproved a little once the truck learns your driving habbits. Which is about 5000 miles or so. Even with hualing it stays about the same. I think we are in the same boat trying to do what ever to improve that number. Keep me posted if you find anything that works.

While the truck learns from your driving habits, I don't believe it ever stops learning. So if you start to drive easier it will modify the way it works... Resetting the values would just make this process quicker.

The TAP (Transmission Adaptive Pressure) Values are what you're looking to clear. I think only the dealer Tech2 tool can do it.

What gears does you trucks have? The 3.73's or 4.10's? That will make a big difference.
