Another fuel economy post.... 2012 2500 HD 4x4

Postby Stonabones69 [OP] » Jan 08 2012, 6:12am

NewB here... I recently purchased a new 2012 2500 HD Z-71 Crew Cab (700 miles so far) and very disappointed with the fuel economy. Let’s face it - we don’t buy these trucks for fuel economy, but it sure would be nice if it wasn’t so horrible... So far I'm at 10.2 MPG around town and 12.1 Highway... Is this normal??? Is there any way to increase the economy (other than a lighter right foot)....? Any info and/or information would help...

Kind Regards, Kyle

Welcome to the site, I think 10.2 around town is very good, I get about 9 around town and 12 to 14 highway depending on the terrain. We have 2 vehicles so we use the other for running around and I use the truck less to keep the cost down a little. I mainly need it to tow the trailer during the summer. I wouldn't trade it for a lower mileage as it does what I need it to do. I hope this helps.

What's your rear axle ratio? I've got the 4.10, and get anywhere from 14 on the highway to 9 if I drive crazily in the city.

Mine is a 4:10. I was suprised that it only gets 10 when I'm driving very easy around town. My Suburban got 13 and I thought that was bad...

Realizing the HD with 4:10's was not made to give economy diven very easily around town, what did the window sticker give for mileage ratings?

Fuel ratings are not given for 2500's as they do not need to be given over a certain GVWR.

Pulling about 12K the DIC says 8 mpg. I have 4k on the pickup.

New to the forums as well, so this is my 1st Post.

I just bought a 2011 2500 Z71 as a leftover trading in a 2008 Dodge RAM 3500 6.7 Cummings.

Right now with about 700 miles on the clock the 6.0 with 3.73:1 rear gear is averaging 13.5 - 14.0 MPG according to my DIC.
That's mixed city Highway, and letting the trans shift on it's own.

Don't know as that will get any better or not as the engine settles in, but 85 octane vs diesel right now, is already saving me some cash at the pump.

Right now being winter and I all I am getting like 8.5 mpgs city but in the warmer months Ill get about 10. Highway I will get about 14-15 mpgs. My truck is an 03 2500 non HD with 4.10 rear end. I was looking to buy an 04 SIlverado 2500 Non HD with a 3.73 rear end and the guy said he got about 8 mpg city and 16-18 highway. So what your getting is pretty normal from what I have seen and others have posted.
