Black Bear Performance

Postby starspangled6.0 [OP] » May 11 2011, 11:56pm

I've been in contact with Black Bear Performance for their mail-order tuning. Here's some facts that I've learned from them, as far as the 6.0L tuning goes:
$300 buys the scan cable tune, during which they mail you a cable, and you record data from your truck, so they can craft a tune specifically for your truck. $200 buys the standard tune. Re-tuning is free for the lifetime of the truck, as long as you pay for shipping. But here's the part that I like- he said that they've had really good success with the 6.0... try 35 HP and 1-3 mpg on for size!

I hope to get the truck tuned this summer.... I would do it soon, but unfortunately I've got to spend some high dollars on a suit for my sister's wedding  . Well, I guess walking my sister down the aisle in style is important, but that tune sure is tempting  .

Good point! I'm pretty pumped... I've searched high and low for the right tuner, and these guys seem to have nailed it- great reputation, low price, lots of HP.

Why is this better then a hand held tuner with custom tunes. With Black Bear you send them your computer they put a tune on it and your stuck with that tune correct? With my hand held I can run what ever tune I want when ever I want. My tuner was $379 with 3 custom tunes and a caned tune that is adjustable for everything. Just woundering

The BB tune comes with a cable so you can data log all your vehicles perimeters onto your laptop and email it to them and then BB goes and reviews it and creates a tune based on those peramiters, not someone elses. Also, once you download that tune into your PCM that is left in your truck not shipped off, you can redata log it and they can verify that what they have done to the tune has actually made improvements. I think a dyno tune is great but "Street Tuning" really puts the car into the real world and lets the tuner dial things in, with the dyno, you usually only get max power not highway and city driving calibration. I was big into this with Hondata on my Civic Si and what they can touch and see you motor doing is amazing. Google E-tunez if you want to see what these guys are capable of with a Civic.

Hmmmm... the plot thickens: here's my latest update- I can get a Hypertech MaxEnergy from Auto Anything for right around $300 (same as the custom Black Bear tune). It also has a dyno sheet, offering 35 HP. I'm thinking I'd like the ease-of-use features in the Hypertech (what if I sell the truck and have to quickly delete the tune, I can adjust shift points, what if I get bigger tires or gears- the Hypertech can handle them all)...
Dang, I can't wait until I make up my mind :(!

I had an SCT for my Ford 6.0 with both the canned & custom tunes.
Although the custom extreme street was like lighting a stick of dynamite i actually preferred the canned street tune for a daily driver.
The SCT was a well made easy to use unit. There is alot of debate going on whether or not the dealer can tell if you have used a tune. i would love one but my warranty is more important to me. I guess the bottom line is these things (tuners) really do work. Hotrodding without getting your hands dirty.
