Brake Rotor/Pad Upgrade

Postby MrGee [OP] » May 17 2012, 8:03pm

Have the truck for a year, the truck brakes good but I would like to upgrade to severe duty rotors or slotted rotors. I'd like to buy a kit, seems like it would be cheaper. Any suggestions?

I'd leave it stock. Why spend money on something you do not really need (I know, I mean something that is not exciting, I buy stuff all the time I don't need)? I would spend the money on somthing better.

Not trying to be a smart-a$$...but this shouldn't be in the Vortec 6000 engine section. However, I have been researching brake upgrades very recently and I would caution you against using cross-drilled rotors on severe duty load braking. Cross-drilled rotors are prone to warping and cracking under extreme heat because they can cool too rapidly and the heat ditribution in the rotor is uneven due to all the holes. Slotted rotors are OK but the slots do weaken the rotor structure because metal has been removed from both wear surfaces. In my opinion, just get standard rotors and go with severe duty, ceramic/metalic pads. Brake pad technology has improved so much that the pads really don't perform much better from added cooling or off-gas removal with slots and holes...at least from what the experts are saying. The manufacturers will tell you different in order to get deeper in your pocket.

Well, my thing is I don't know the history on the brakes. If I'm towing I need to be able to stop or just for regular driving, it's not for being pretty, I would like to know I'm safe or anybody else for that matter.

So they are needed, just didn't know if anybody has used these or maybe extreme duty brake parts, different brands etc.

You are right! I had saved a link and didn't notice I was adding to the engine section, my bad! Thanks for the info and it makes sense. I did want to hear from other members who have either had the brakes and used etc. Appreciate the info!

No problem! I replaced my brake pads and rotors (all 4) for the first time at 150K. Although, I only did a limited amount of towing during those 150K, I now have an RV that I tow on a regular basis. That being said, I installed standard rotors and severe duty pads all around...have had no problems stopping quickly with the RV after tacking on another 7K miles.
