Fluctuating Oil Pressure Gauge

Fluctuating Oil Pressure Gauge

Postby redsilver [OP] » Aug 09 2012, 1:28am

Hello,

I had the first oil change done on my truck since I bought it. It's free at the dealership so I figured I'd take advantage of that since it's hell hot outside.

Reason I'm writing is this. Either I didn't notice it since I bought the truck that it did it, or it just started happening, but now the oil pressure gauge fluctuates a lot from idle to driving.

At startup and idle, it sits just above the 20 mark, at 65 MPH it sits right around 40, usually a hair below and got above 40 if I hit passing gear.

Is this normal? It's the first vehicle I've owned where the gauge travels like this. The engine is running fine, and I'll list the stats below.

It's a 2009 2500 HD 4x4 with the heavy duty towing package and 29K miles on it.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Ed

Sounds just like my 2012 w/ 5.3L and AFM. I have about 4500 miles.

Thanks for the reply. I've done some more googling and it looks like more vehicles do that than don't...guess I just haven't been paying that much attention to that gauge.

hey man your oil pump is attached to your belt so the faster your belt moves the faster the pump moves causeing the pressure to fluctuate along with the gauge. I had mine replaced a few years ago and i rarely make it past 40. Its common with trucks so dont worry about it.

I also have a new pressure gauge issue. Mine reads 65 at cold start up and pegs when driving. Seems to be running fine and no strange readings from any other gauges. Has anyone else had this problem and a solution? Thanks in advance.
