Homemade Ram Air Intake for less than $30

Postby bbrown [OP] » Oct 13 2011, 3:45pm

I am going to risk sounding like a silly redneck but I believe everyone is born with a little bit of redneck ingenuity. So here goes; I was impressed by a 2009 2500HD about a month ago while RV camping, that had a functioning Ram Air hood scoop. The owner was kind enough to show me under the hood and sure thing... it was impressive. Lately I've been wanting to do something like that to my truck. So I got on the internet and searched out all the equipment. Turns out, there isn't a RA after market hood made for a 2001 model. I know Banks has a kit and there are others if I was willing to shell-out the cash. But I'm not so I decided to figure out how to build one myself. I decided not to cut-up my hood and instead see if I could get a duct to the bumper and scoop the air right in front. Well, last night I was foolin' around with a piece of aluminum duct (not the foil sh!t) that you can bend and form into a curved shape, and what do ya know... it fits perfectly and ends up right where I needed it. After that worked so well, I drilled a 4" hole in the floor of the airbox and the support plate. Results were just beautiful, better than I ever thought it would fit. I going to post some photos if anyone else is interested. I've still got to build some kind of air manifold behind the bumper vents to scoop the air to the duct but at the moment I have a functining CAI with a K&N filter and Modular Intake Tube from the airbox to the throttle body. Gonna do some testing this weekend. I'm pumped and itching to see the effects will be. Yeah, I'm a redneck at heart!

Not yet but I plan to get plenty of photos this evening and post them along with the steps of what I did. You won't beleive how easy it was to get the first phase done.

Great idea! Can't wait to see the results as I've been mulling the same idea for my CAI.

Yeah, interesting suggestions. I do have fog lights. I'm looking at using the four vent holes that are near the top of the front bumper. They are centered under the radiator. I'll get pics tonight. I'm thinking about trying to find some rectangular plastic bins that are about 6" wide at the open top and maybe 8" deep. Ahh, it just came to me....a military ammo box will work...I think. I'm gonna run buy an Army surplus store after work!
