I don't think there's a whole lot you're going to be able to do. How you drive is probably the biggest factor. Avoid jack rabbit starts at every stop ....avoid letting the engine rev out in each gear versus trying to get it into OD/lockup ASAP ....anticipating stop lights (coasting in when you see it's red) and trying to avoid a complete stop. Maintaining a constant speed ....versus working the gas pedal constantly. Check your tire pressures; pump them up a minimum of 2 psi above the factory recommendation (which is really geared for ride comfort than anything else) but you can go as high as the sidewall rating. Turn off the A/C. If you leave the HVAC controls in the "Defrost" mode realize it will operate the A/C compressor ...use "Defrost" only when needed then put the control to "Vent" or some other non-Defrost mode. If you have a rear slider, open it and open you window ...the combo works great for air flow without a lot of buffeting.

I'm sure there'll be somebody telling you to get a "tune" on it ....maybe get an extra mile or so out of your hefty cash layout.

In the end you may just have to live with it. HD trucks with big a$$ V-8's are bought for their abilities first and gas mileage is what it is.
I'm not so much a smart guy as a guy smart enough to know how to find out....

My 6.0 usually responds pretty well to my driving style (i.e., if I race a lot, I'll pay for it later at the pump). I did gain 1 MPG when I tuned the truck with Hypertech, but that was an investment of $300, something that will take a year or so to pay for itself. I know GM has re-worked the 6.0 since the version that's in my truck, but I just don't think there's a lot of MPG to be had from it. Power, yes, MPG, maybe not so much. Sure, you can drop a lot of $$$ on a cam, intake, full exhaust, tune, etc., and gain a lot more than 1 MPG like I did, but then you'll never see the financial return.

Try to keep the tack to less than 20000 as it changes gears. Thats my tip and it seems to work for me.

A lot of things that you can do to increase performance will also increase fuel mileage especially if you stay off the accelerator. I went from 12 to 19.5 mpg by getting new exhaust, new high flow air filter, tonneau cover and making sure that I shift at 2000 RPMs, as well as going easy on the accelerator and brakes and popping it in neutral while going down hills. Getting some non-ethanol gas and a fiberglass cover this weekend hoping to break the 20 wall, gonna baby it and see if I can hit 22. Gotta love a manual tranny.

Is that in town mileage or combined mileage.. New exhaust? What kind, how much, who did the work. I have the tonneau cover, and just ordered the k&n cold air intake. Shift at 2000 rpms? What is that................. In manual?

Yeah I got a manual, pretty much any high flow exhaust should get you 1-3 mpg I have dual super 44s but it is a bit loud for most people, can't talk on the phone without holding the clutch in. it was 300 for me to get done at Little Tire Company in Fredericksburg, VA. Manual tranny is the biggest way to save gas clutch in and it drops to 500RPMs auto just stays wherever for the speed you are going uses an incredible amount of gas. Also, if you drive behind semi trucks you can draft and unfortunatley the biggest thing is to not drive fast I get around 15.5 if I drive on 64 or 95. My mileage is based on the tank, between fillups which is usually at the halfway mark divide the miles you drove by the gas you used.

We'll assume David meant 2,000 not 20,000.

Well, ya know F1 cars have V8s that redline at 18,000 RPM, so 20,000 is possible :D. Of course, those engines cost a little bit more than ours do ;).
